I think for this new game it wouldn't be a bad idea to ditch the everything explodes and everything goes in your pocket mentality from Terraria. This way the player doesn't overburden themselves fighting and there's a thrill of discovery similar to looting except on a variety of aliens. To acquire items from fallen foes, you could search and dissect, as long as the creature is whole and did not react to the method used to kill it, and you have the adequate equipment (higher-tier tools like a light knife may be needed to penetrate the hide of a thicker beast). Also there could be ruined versions items perchance you use explosives or fire. If the alien monsters generate as a unique compound of selected parts, these parts, like hides and fluids, can be used to craft with once treated, rather than the one-material-does-all scheme. Also non-immediate/interactive crafting for lower tiers and more crafting tools could work but that's a different story.

I'm not really convinced it's a good idea. For normal "drops", at least, I wouldn't want to have to search each body. That would just add tedium. If there should be anything like this, it would have to be kinda like skinning in WoW - you would just "harvest" the dead bodies. I do think they should have death animations depending on the way things die though. Like them just falling over from normal attacks, turning black/charred if dying from burning, getting blown to chunks (aka "gibbed") if dying from an explosion, etc.
Dude, we should ditch this whole idea of building things mentality from minecraft. We should also ditch the idea of guns, because thats halo and call of duty mentality. We should also get rid of armor, because of any game ever mentality.
