Modding Help Mods won't work

I've recently started modding Starbound but no matter what tutorial I use they either crash the game or won't work, is there anyway I can fix this? I am running Starbound on a Mac

 

you might want to try to check your log, troubleshooting is 50% to 90% of the work.

 

Make sure you are not installing mods from the "Outdated Mods" category.

 

writing mods...or just installing other peoples mods? If its writing mods: as stated, check (or post) your error log for the issue.

if its merely installing other peoples mods, as mackinz said : make sure it isn't outdated. if it isn't, modpacks go into /mods/ , and if the mod isnt a modpack it goes into /mods/ModFolderName (where ModFolderName is the name of the mod unzipped and dragged into the /mods/ folder). Pretty simple.
