Mission boards would be a board hanging up in your ship or on your planet, and what it does is it puts up random missions onto one secluded board, these can range from kill missions, boss missions, bounties, planet help, civilization help, and players themselves can even put up things on it for other players! Some missions put up will actually send you to pretty dangerous "dungeon" like planets, which can yield very hard challenges, yet good rewards! Some of these could be to difficult to solo so you might need a friend for certain ones, but rewards gained from quests go to each player individually. Mission Boards as they would be would have quests for random coordinated planets and even already entreed planets, and can be accessed by anyone, and when I say anyone, I mean ANYONE. Robots, Npcs, Players, Bunnies (No jk) you name it! They also serve as trading boards.
I know it's not a very UNIQUE idea but hey it would make finding things to do easier :p
Log Messages are kind of like Starbounds equivilent to Whispers, but with more then just that, sometimes people will message you with missions, and usually they will be important ones if they contact you directly, but messages comes elusiveness. Some messages will show up as ANONYMOUS and only tell you to come to a certain planet or just kill someone or something, what's the danger in that? Every once in a while ANONYMOUS messages are assasins or pirates who just send you to planets to ambush you, and they come well prepared... but if you kill them everything they have is yours.
Another Idea is Planet missions, sometimes you'll get a mission from locals of a planet that their planet is in danger, and you have to save that planet, and this basically means 1 of 3 things... Scenario 1, Space combat, this is usually fairly easy if it's something simple such as pirates, but sometimes it can be motherships, in which case, it's like a boss fight in space. 2: The planet is suffering from an infection, if this is the case, you have to kill each of the infected enemies on the planet, while infected enemies do more damage, have more health, and can even have better AI, and are also slightly "Eviler." And Number 3, a creature has inhabited their planet and they want it GONE, these are either VERY tough enemies, or just bosses that will be giant, some can even go inside the planets.
Finally... "Challenge" missions! These are basically what their name intends. These can be gotten from a certain type of npc called the "Danger Artist" And what they are are usually boss fights, killing enemies, or even races, and doing them within time limits, or just having to call a LOT of creatures. Races can be in space but can also be on planets. Some challenges can even be hide and seek themed, meaning find a certain enemy and kill it before the time runs out. Challenge missions are odd though, sometimes they only offer things like clothes, while other times they can offer the best of the best weapons!
I hope you enjoyed reading my massive wall of text! It's going to be a new boss in the game >:]
Thanks for reading and leave any questions or anything you have below ;)

A lot of fairly worthy concepts are suggested here, and I don't know why, but I feel like I'm already familiar with most of them. I do hope at least some of this will be implemented, because this makes a lot of sense. Though I have to ask, what do you feel about some having some sort of a main story line implemented into the game, which would kind of help out the new player with getting resources and becoming familiar with the combat, since some will have no idea about what they should be doing? Although, without actually requiring the player to complete it to advance in the game, so that players already familiar with the game who are starting anew could ignore it and do what they wish.

Story missions would usually be given by NPCs but can also be recieved by the log messager. Story missions would probably be missions where you have to go from planet to planet doing things that you've been asked to do, even eventually doing things like killing bosses and such.
