...is SO incredibly slow with a matter manipulator. How do you guys recommend going about it?

I think sometimes the game makes you mine on them for a certain ore.I do not remember as I have not played in a few weeks.

the dead planet is the same thing in ore topic, but with less lava

Yup, dead planets work. Plus it's just a bunch of sand, so it's easier to mine. Just watch out for meteors.

Diamond drills cut through volcanic rocks much quicker, so put some work into developing those.

Then find a low point in the terrain and start digging there, so there's less hard rock. You'll break through to a softer layer much quicker, and the ore rewards are plentiful.

bomb your way through the hard layer.

There are mod tools that treat the hard layer like melted cheese.......so go get yourself one, nice to have on hand for situations like these.

I'm trying to do my first run mainly vanilla. Every once in a while if I lose something in a multiplayer server (or, for that matter, in my unorganized, interplanetary piles of crates and chests) that I REALLY
need to make progress, I'll just spawn it in with admin commands and usually delete the original if I ever find it, but I'm mostly trying to reach top tier without mods and cheats.

Yeah. I'm not fond of turning to mods to make life easier in this game as a default reaction to an obstacle, especially when often we're given in-game tools to solve the issue. In this case, just make a few diamond drills.

Seriously, once you're past the outer shell, the insides are teeming with ores... and that's every planet I've ever been on. Ever /fullbright once you're past the surface layer? That'll change your perception of the ore RNG real fast if you think it's too rare.

Aside from not wanting to rely on mods, I keep my /admin stuff to a bare minimum. I had to use it recently to go through all the quests again as my ship got re-set (lost a few things in that, nothing irreplacable but still), and on occasion I'll use /fullbright when on a huge build and I just don't wanna wait for daylight to return.

Well if you're willing to cheat to rectify your own mistakes why not cheat to rectify the game's own errors? I mean thousands of years of technological advancement and FTL travel and your problem is.....a layer of rocks? Seriously? That's not even cheating at all......cutting through it like melted cheese is exactly how it should be.

But in the most cases you're outcasted or kicked out from your planet, you have nothing but a wrecked ship and some tools, also technology is always someting that is controlled by something or someone

For one thing, as I mentioned, I try to compensate for when I do occasionally cheat by getting rid of the items I'm cheating to make
up for, such as when I need ONE diamond for something and don't feel like searching through all 40 of my different storage crates
along with the ship locker. It's something I know I actually have, so I don't really feel like I'm "cheating" if I spawn another of it in and
delete it when I actually find it. I call it my Pocket Insta-teleportation "Technique". I already completed the challenge involved in getting
the diamond in the first place.

Just admining/modding through hard rock, however, is directly bypassing a challenge that the developers intended to have me
complete, which DOES legitimately feel like cheating. Obviously there's a better way to go about it than the matter manipulator.
Probably drills and explosives, like everyone is saying.

What kind of storage system do you use? 'Cuz thanks to the wiiiide variety of storage devices they give us, I find it pretty easy to sort and find stuff...

    upload_2015-3-21_13-40-25.png

Theses are all chests full of different types of crafting materials. I know Diamond (and Gold) are in the regular chest, as I've got that stack sorted by vague tier: Rust has cheapest Copper & Silver, regular Gold & Diamond, gold chest has Platinum, then the "upgradable" ores in semi-color-coordinated chests. (It'd be easier if we could make chests out of each ore. I think there used to be, but they got pulled for some reason. They should bring those back.)

I really should update the storage suggestions thread with my new base & ship storage facilities... or just make a new one. Any rate, enough of that tangent...

Yeah. Hard rock isn't "broken" like, say, the mis-aligned Erchius Horror beams. That kind of rock is SUPPOSED to be tough to get through. And we're given the tools in-game to solve that issue.

I don't get the fixation with what the developers intended.....it's a game....its purpose is fun....when a feature doesn't make sense you work around it and move on.

Wrong, you don't start in a system with a volcanic planet so you have a ship in good order so you are not by any means stuck there and a tool to deal with rocks should be an absolute must in the toolbox of any ship....even your own has one, it just happens to ignore thousands of years of technological advancement......that can easily be written off as a design flaw and fixed with a mod.

The game still on beta, maybe they'll fix that, it don't bother me though, i use diamond drills and bombs to cover the situation

So why isn't Mario always invincible and can fly all the time to just plow through every level to the goal unimpeded? I mean, who cares what the developers intended? What, they expect us to PLAY the levels, solve puzzles, use skill? Feh.

Oh, and let's give him a machinegun with unlimited ammo too while we're at it. Clearly an oversight on the developer's part that must be ignored.
