Right now, when you hold shift you focus the mining area down to a single block. I think it would make sense that, since you are effectively focusing your effort on a single block instead of 9, that this should take about 9 times less time than mining the full 3-by-3 area. Sometimes you want to just get a single block and therefore would be willing to make a tradeoff between efficiency and speed. Overall the balance of the game remains unchanged, since it would still take the same amount of time to mine 9 blocks, whether you choose to do 3-by-3 once, or 9 times 1-by-1. It doesn't even have to be a full 9 times faster, I'd be fine with going 2-3 times faster on a single block. The point is just that in cases where you need to remove a single piece as opposed to strip-mine a large area, it should be a little bit faster.
I agree, but I think mining 1x1 should just take 2 or 3 time less than 3 x 3. This way removing a single block would become 3 or 4 time faster, while mining 3 x 3 at a time stay the fastest way to dig.
Yes, 1v1 mining speed needs to be adjusted. Though I would prefer shift to switch into a 2x4 grid for mining horizontally.
Maybe the grid could be adjusted with the SHIFT function acting as a toggle between 3 x 3, 2 x 4, 1 x 1, etc. So instead of holding Shift, you just hit it to cycle through
Yes, this should be done! I agree 2 or 3 times faster is a decent balance for a single block. Also, I agree that shift should cycle through each dimension, but shift is also for walking. So something would need to be changed for the shift button, whether walking is a different button entirely or to cycle through could be a different button.
I think that's overcomplicating it a bit. it would require a clear indicator of which mode you are currently in and seems it would be more trouble than it's worth. While, as mentioned above, I don't particularly agree that multiple modes are necessary, I do hope that when we do eventually get rebind-able keys, that they allow the binding of separate keys for each.
