Minimaps In Starbound?

One of the most important features (at least for me) in the new terraria 1.2 update was the addition of the minimaps system. Not only is the map excellent to look at, it also provided a map of the explored underground, so that I can navigate some of the tunnels without the need to light it up. I was wondering, would starbound eventually implement a minimap as well? I would seem like a good addition to the game.

I could imagine this being some sort of piece of tech you could craft/find and equip, like a little mapping computer you carry around with you.

Oh hey, that's actually not bad. Maybe this could be an actual GPS, even more so than the GPS in terraria.

LOVE the idea of being able to craft it. A minimap would also be very helpful when exploring new worlds. I like this.
If it is/going to be implemented, though, I hope we can re-size it. That's the only thing I don't like about Terraria's one. It gets somewhat annoying when you have it on and you need to shoot some things, and you can't see.
At least I don't think we can re-size it. lol

To be fair, you could close it, or change it to something else in the Esc menu.

A fair question, and I agree, but don't forget that Terraria was still fantastic without it. :3

Oh heck yeah. And now that terraria has it, 1.2 is much easier to navigate than ever.

Very true! It almost makes the game too easy, though. The map's so easily exploitable now that it'll show you rooms you may not have noticed otherwise. :3

Yeah, I agree with Shade: You'll probably have to craft a GPS in every planet you'd visit, or a tech or something.

Personally, I hated the minimap in Terraria. I have no words explaining how reliefed I was when I found out I could turn it off :p

Somehow like the maps in Minecraft that only cover a certain area.

I don't like the minimaps =S, kinda ruin the "EXPLORING", unless it was like a minecraft map were you could handle it to someone

Yeah, i'd definitely prefer a Minecraft style map system over a Terraria style one. The problem with the Terraria minimap is there's no "fog of war", as it were.* You should really only be able to see things you've been near and the device would just record and show you that (in the form of a map and/or minimap). Being able to put waypoints on the map would be cool as well. Makes it easier to find something you found before (or find your house, the worst thing ever is when you get lost :( ), and doesn't negate actually exploring things.

*It's not a deal breaker for me, but i'd definitely prefer it not to show me things I shouldn't be able to see.

Edit**: So hey, here's a few ideas I thought of while in the shower (or, as I like to call it, the Cubicle of Ideas™).

Starting off, there's the mapping tool/GPS/thingy that's been mentioned. First of all it would be a tech item, so that you have to use a tech slot to get the functionality. Now here comes the interesting part: functionality that allows the sharing of map data.

So say the device itself records a picture of the world in map form, whether that's a map, minimap or both. This would use ye olde "fog of war" mechanics and such. The device itself would "save" the map data for each individual world to a separate "file" which could then be transfered to some sort of "data chip" item as a copy of what's on the device. Another player could then add that chip to their own device and get that data (in the case of having data for a world already, it would just combine the two together, so the player gains the "revealed area" of both pieces of data). Perhaps waypoints could be placed on the map, which would also be included in the "data file" when transfered.

This could be interesting for NPCs as well, if you had some way to have them sell data chips with particular sections of map/waypoint data. Or you loot one off a dead bandit that has a waypoint of a secret stash, or a map of their hideout. Many, many possibilities.

(I have no idea about coding and stuff, so I realise this could be a horrific idea from a coding perspective. :p )

**Just to clarify, failcake liked this post before the edit, so they liked the top part and not the rest. Just in case they think the edit is a stupid idea. :p I just don't want to get eaten by the mods for double posting. It's either that or I have to offer human sacrifices to appease them, and that's really messy. :p

Well, the minimap/fullmap in Terraria is excessively broken when you factor in that anything revealed by spelunker potions are permanently added, making them excessively OP. (And that's the last thing I'll say about that, these aren't Terraria forums)

  14. A minimap tech/item would be cool, with custom player markers, icons and stuff like that.

gasp! LOVE the idea of a craftable map tech. Maybe there could be different map recharge. Like a basic map tech could be like a written map and you need to actually manually stop and press a button to jot down the area around you to add it to your map. And then later on you get into better tech.

Hopefully not. I feel that it makes the game too easy.

I actually liked Terraria's minimap and would love something like that for starbound, but... more refined. Clearing map through walls (X-ray vision~) Is not a good thing. And being able to re-size it would be nice. Maybe have it as an activate-able accessory, or a "Held" gps? Like sword in one hand gps in the other, lets go spelunking kind of a deal?

  18. Razyar

Well it would be pretty hard to get lost on a planet in Starbound, them being round and all.

Not the surface I get lost on. I build vast (and I mean vast) underground networks. by day 3 my 1.2 map looked like a labyrinth. Or an oubliette since I always had to kill myself or magic mirror to escape. Then finding my way back to the place I last was, was nigh on impossible. Until I realized the minimap functioned. Then I was able to navigate my tunnels and it was fun!

Since planets are going to be looped in Starbound, I'm hoping they would innovate the way the mini-map/map is presented. It would make it a lot more refreshing, although I'm unsure how they might go about doing this.
