While I'd be the usual buzzkill here, all "Well *nerd snort* STARBOUND is not yet out so I CANNOT judge it yet. *Adjust hipster glasses*". I find myself coming to the conclusion of Starbound. I already enjoy Terraria more, for it's charm and such, but I see Starbound's art style and the ambition behind it and can only project a higher rating.

Do you play on servers? I hardly touch single-player anymore unless I've got mods installed.

I tended to play a very heavily modded game, but I just got tired of minecraft's atrocious (Lack of a) mod UI and trying to keep everything up to date. I played on a server with a few friends for a while but got bored of that too. Lately I've been playing Terraria while hosting my own small-load server.

What I'm saying is that I'm tired of Minecraft since it has gone downhill since a year back. I miss the beta...

Minecraft, i have no idea how Starbound really is so i cant really have a opinion on it since i never played it myself.

The best game is Psychonauts-- oh wait, that's not an option. Okay then. The best game is neither. Starbound isn't released yet, and Minecraft is okay, but got boring for me long ago.

A much better comparison would be Starbound vs Terraria, because... you know, 2D games?

Starbound isn't even out yet... how can we even begin to discuss this topic?

If you ask me now, of course I'd say Starbound. That's because I've played Minecraft for like... 3-4 years? I still go to MineZ with my friends sometimes, but I think I've seen everything in that game. Mods, servers, people, adventure maps, LAN, dull updates... Not to forget inappropriate creations by 6-year old people.

    Starbound:
    -Doesn't exist
    Minecraft:
    +Exists
    +Balanced and essential tiers
    +Loads of replay value
    +Modding
    +Fun MP
    +Building
    -Poor monsters
    -Poor optimisation

    Minecraft of course.

    Starbound:
    +will exist soon enough
+modding out of the box, no hacks needed to allow
    +random monsters
    +insanely huge world
+pretty much all of the replay value

Phew, that is one high horse you got there. It's a valid point. Comparing a long since complete game to an unreleased game with a completely different focus is silly.

Well I have not yet played Starbound so the answer is simple. Both for now :p.

Minecraft wins so far. I think both will be good though.

I've always looked at Minecraft being an excellent building game with no "real" objective. (I suppose you could argue the dragon and nether aspects of the game)

Like others have said, since we haven't really tried Starbound out yet, I'll use Terraria as a base example. Terraria is an excellent adventure game with building tied in. The 3 dimensional space really helps when trying to convey a building. What I've seen in Starbound vs Terraria so far I have liked. Adding extra layers of roofing, walls and general use of "props" definitely helps Starbound standout from the 2d platformer building games.

    For me in general:

Minecraft; excellent building building game but can lack direction at times

Starbound/Terraria; excellent adventure game but creativity when building can be hindered due to the 2d plane

    Different strokes for different folks.

To be honest, I'm pretty excited about Everquest Next Landmark. Some impressive tools they've been showing off over there at SOE.
