Why would anyone ever want a cash shop?...

That was what we were thinking when the suggestion was made.

While the cash shop thing is out, there was mention of them discussing /possible/ paid servers, where monthly content would be played out after release.
(This content would still be released to everyone, just the developers would run a sort of subscription gm service running people through the content on servers.)

However that was awhile back and I don't remember if that is the exact phrasing or, if they have any plans to implement it. Just they had talked about something like it.

With how much modding this game may have, I don't think micro-transactions have a place here.

    Microtransactions, DLC and Expansions...

I'd like someone to be able to draw a line and tell me the difference between small cosmetic DLC and cosmetic microtransactions or a small expansion and a large content dlc.
Hell, are free content updates not just free DLC?

From what I understand. Expansions tend to be large and add quite a bit of new content. DLC tends to be smaller and add like, a few weapons, a map or two, or a new character/race, etc. Mircotransactions are even smaller things like fewer weapons or armor/clothing or items that you buy in-game or a store site. Microtransactions in mmo's tend to be things that you may not need like a boost in power or vanity or fun things.

  9. Thank God for not micro transactions, AirMech would have been an awesome game had it not been for their micro transactions.

Personally why the hate with microtransactions? (Whoa hold up don't flame me yet) If it doesnt affect gameplay and is just for cosmetic purposes, why not? Good why to look cool by sparing some blings as well as supporting the devs.

The problem with Microtransactions, specifically with Starbound, is that we've already been given promise of something that is as loyal to it's customers as possible. Hiding features, even cosmetic ones, behind a pay-wall tends to be seen as a stingy thing, especially in games that are multiplayer optional.

The big problem most people have with microtransactions is they're often done in intentionally scammy and scummy ways. The other issue is that a lot of "free" or "one-time payment" multiplayer games that come out with microtransactions quickly create a pay-to-win environment that make it especially time consuming, or flat out impossible, to compete with players willing to blow a few bucks.

I just, don't even know why you would for this sort of game. It's like trying to imagine minecraft and terraria with them, just doesn't work in my brain.

What would they charge, a pound per pixel? Yeah get on that devs :V

microtransactions were the worst thing to come to game industry..even beyond devs listening to anyone from tumblr seriously and movies based on games.

    Hopefully this won't happen.

Hey now, guys. There's nothing wrong with microtransactions...as long as they're done right.

That said, microtransactions would not work with a game like Starbiund.

Starbound has native mod support so it would not be lucrative or beneficial for them to paywall content, because more likely than not that content would be pirated in through third party mods. The most successful paywalling is done on server-based games, where pirating or modding in blocked off content is basically impossible.
