Microtransactions?

Hey there, everyone,

I admit, I haven't fully researched this before posting, but I did do my best to browse through the F.A.Q.s and did a quick 'search' through the forums. That being said, I have also forgotten how to tie my own shoes, so it could have been touched on already, and I just missed it. If that is the case, I would appreciate a point in the right direction!

Now, to my post:

Simple, really...

I have played an online game for YEARS, and the developers decided to all of a sudden implement a micro-payment system. I hate to say it, but this completely ruined the game for me. It was hard to break the addiction, but eventually it became easier. I don't exactly mind the system - I understand the immense profits that occur after said system is introduced.

The dev team at Starbound seems to have outdone themselves time and again, and I truly don't believe that, with so much passion, they could be swayed with the notion of supplemental income at the sacrifice of some enjoyment.

However, I once believe this about another game, and it ended quite sour.

My point here is, I would love to have a team member of Starbound, preferably the creator himself, confirm that there will or will not be microtransactions.

I am entirely biased, yes, but I still seek at least a definitive statement regarding this issue.

EDIT - It looks like I'm getting a lot of flack (Pfft, they can just be modded in, OP is bonkers!).

I'd just like to state that I don't have much experience with computer-based games, so I apologize.

 

There's been no serious mention of microtransactions being a thing. In fact, I'm pretty sure it's been just outright said there will be no such thing. There's been 'episodic content' mentioned, but I'm fairly certain they mentioned it would be free. There's also planned to be regular updates. Also free.

Also, considering the game is made to be fully moddable, people would just... mod any microtranaction things into their game for free. So it's pointless anyways.

 

I believe the dev team have said there won't be any form of micro transactions or cash shops. In a game like this, it'd be rather out of place anyway.

 

Tiy has said numerous times that there won't be microtransactions.

@Raybrandt , Good point, Ray. I don't play many Steam games, so I don't know much about modding, but it definitely makes sense, and thank goodness for that!

@claudekennilol , That would be Runescape. It wasn't the microtransactions alone, but they definitely contributed.

I'd rather they don't add this. I prefer to just buy my games not pay for my content.

 

I would not mind microtransactions like Path of Exile have, you don't ever have to touch them to enjoy the game fully, they are completly optional but just so I support the devs for creating such awesome game and making it free to play without even forcing you to buy something I have bought some cosmetic stuff for my characters.
I even expect them to be in free to play games, devs also have to eat.
But I definitely dislike them in games that you have to pay for before you can even play and I hate if it's terrible bussiness model like "you can buy this perfect weapon, you can never find something even similiar to this in the game and you just have to buy it or you are not cool", basicly pay to win model, if you have ever heard about "Dead Frontier" which is a web based zombie apocalipse game, pay to win is implemented there and there are quite a few of them, don't trust free to play browser games, they are usually designed to eat your wallet sometimes even with pants .

But micotransactions in a game like Starbound? What the hell that would be awfull, not that I would not love to support the devs some more but for that I can just buy some extra games for my friends or for giveaways. And it has been said that we'd get any content for free anyway so we don't have to worry about a thing.

 

It will never happen in a million years. The only DLC will be free content or something on the lines of expansion packs, which they declared a major "if".

 

I'm unsure if they discussed while ago to have Extra paid content to Starbound, like one expansion DLC, i can't remember correctly but i guess one team member said that may still be a reality along with the content updates the game will have after release.

Micro transactions?

 

I can see the use of micro transactions in free-to-play mmos, but in stand alone games that you purchase I think they are just gouging you for what you should have got already.

 

The only kind of microtransactions that I believe could work for Starbound would be those in the form of big expansion packs. Potentially ones that add new game mechanics along with maybe new races and gear.

Smaller DLC wouldn't feel right; especially if it were a few armor sets here and there. It'd just feel like a cheap cash in.

 

How would you add microtransactions in a game that can be modded?

Happened to me too man. I feel for ya. Microtransactions are the worst. I don't think we need to worry about it in Starbound though.
