Hi, I'm new to this forum. I just signed up to pitch this idea I just had: Meteors! These could be nice to look at, but also be opportunities for rare loot items: On planets with atmospheres: They can just be shooting stars in the background. They are particularly visible at night, and on rare occasions you might see a meteor shower. Rarely you might also find a meteorite on the ground. On planets without atmospheres (moon biome?): Since there's no atmosphere to burn them up, they just fall to the ground. This also means that you might see meteors falling around you as you walk around on the surface. You should be able to pick them up. There would be no falling stars in the sky on these planets, since there's no atmosphere to burn them up. In spaceship: Falling stars in the atmosphere of a planet should be visible from orbit. Loot: A number of types of loot might be available from a meteorite found on the surface of a planet: - A boost of precious ores might be found in a meteorite. - Tech might be found enclosed inside the core. - A beacon sent by a young civilization hoping to be visited by intelligent alien life forms, e.g. Voyager Golden Record. These messages can contain coordinates to distant (or nearby) planets where you might find settlements. For fun, some of these might be traps - Satellite parts!
This could be incredibly fun. I'd like to see, once in a while, however, a really, really big meteor that changes the planet/moon it lands on, perhaps in an apocalyptic kind of way. ( but not my home planet please! )
