I was doing a bit of crafting, and I saw it coming - about sixteen blocks across, hurtling toward my house. Luckily I'd been focused on progression and my house was just a basic box, so I didn't lose much. I can load everything up on my ship and make a new home somewhere else.
Wow. That's some crappy luck. I usually spend some time on a world to make sure that meteors aren't part of the "weather". Right in the house too
I'll scout the planet for meteors when I relocate. This was my starting planet, so this is where I started building. And it took a long time for the meteors to finally show up - I had just unlocked Sector X and was smelting my first load of aegisalt when it hit.
This server I play, an anarchy server, people love to grief spawn. So much so, they have used those big meteors to completely destroy all ground around spawn for 8 screens, to be 11 screens deep. Plus they glitched lava to stay right where you spawn.
Unfortunately the spawn rate for the large-meteor weather is very low, you can easily go 3 or 4 hours or more without seeing one, long enough to give the all-clear and start building
Dang, I do a lot of planet hopping, but I still spend at least 1-2 hours on each, and I have never once come across meteors =(
I once built an underground base, but kept a multi-layer garen on top. Then a meteor came. The structure survived, the dirt didn't. My crops!
That was the worst part. I didn't know which were there. I managed to get my hands on every kind of seed.
Damn, that sucks. I didn't have any plants growing, so I don't know for sure how it affects crops. But all of my stuff was still safe - I just had to pick it up off the ground. I thought seeds would do the same.
Dang. Sorry about your building. Hey, at least we're getting wiped. I remember the first time I experienced meteors... I was in an Avian village, watching as they all got flattened by the meteors. I had to take cover under different houses while screaming "WHAT IS GOING ON" out loud.
I've already rebuilt bigger and better. I even looted some extra bricks from a castle that was being destroyed by a meteor storm. But damn, I've never seen another big one like that. That was impressive.
I was raiding a Glitch Castle and Bam half of the Castle went Boom. I saw on the edge of my screen the meteor but I was Like OMG I hope it doesn't rain these darn things. But I have to say it made my job that much easier.
Lucky you - I startet just today (2014-02-16) after the last wipe in mid-january and my first planet was hit 3 times by a big meteor strike in the first 2 hours. All hits got my base. Then I moved to an inner planet of the same sun (no fuel yet) and there I had small meteors raining 4 times but no big strike. And that was just for 4 hours today. Watch the sky, starbounders!
Wow, that's one big meteor. Be glad you don't have that mod installed that makes meteors spawn Tentacomet minions
The same thing happened to my first home, but I had spent hours making it look the way I wanted. Most of it got totally destroyed and my storage rooms got destroyed. I lost so much that day. I started trying to repair what had been destroyed and Picking up as much of the important drops as possible. Unfortunately, about half an hour after the first strike, my bas got hit a second time. Totally decimating my farm and any attempts at storing any important items like ores, boss drops and weapons. After the second hit I decided to give up on that world and move somewhere new. If i ever come across that hell-hole again I'll put up a screen shot.
