I'd love them more if they were rare on any planets I've visited in my game. My spawn world had them, and all but one of the T1 worlds I visited did as well. Now I'm roaming in T2 and the planet I'm currently trying to explore has them ludicrously often. In the space of about three hours I got killed by meteors eight times, even with a full set of armor I'm being one hit. I have made no buildings, I simply want to explore the planets at this point and I'm being restricted in doing so by the fact once I start roaming I'll either be hit by meteors or acid rain.
That's a lot of bad luck I haven't even seen a meteor shower once. I have to agree with the comments of others: no starting on planets with hazardous weather and a weather scanner so you can know if it's safe to build.
Meteors are the bane of my (starbound) life. Hate it when you explore planet you find something cool and without warning hit by a rock from space........... then all the way back to spawn an another 20 mins of traveling to the same spot.
I found an awesome planet, not too big, good temperature and normal gravity. I was halfway through building myself a home there and made it my home planet. Then...the meteor shower... I watched with horror as my carefully placed blocks fell to the ground, crushed by unforgiving space rock.
I just visited beta sector, and found a nice new planet... Wait, that sounds horribly like your post above. Mine was a bit cold, nothing to stop me from exploring in full set of winter clothes though, pools of poison were so rare, lots of minerals and nice high jumps due low gravity. And lo and behold, yet another planet with meteor showers. Oh well, I explored it a fair bit, few game days, before I started to build a surface home there. Then they came down smashing my stone castle... Oh well, next planet must be better. I also had them on my spawn planet. My voice to this issue though, weather scanner might be a good idea, but maybe as a craftable item/tech? I quite like the ever so slightly punishing nature of the game as is. Meteor showers do suck, but oh well. Isn't this game more about survival than catering of those poor players? Let it be punishing, I thought that's the direction.
Check out this mod! http://community.playstarbound.com/index.php?resources/meteor-showers-no-longer-destroy-blocks.1213/ It will stop Meteor Showers from damaging your homes! Large meteors will still do damage until it's updated, but small ones won't!
I agree with this idea. Meteors appear to be one hit killing players indiscriminately, and should not be in the way of new players. Another solution may be to have the universe generation designate some planets as starting planets that do not have any deadly weather problems.
I like this idea. A craftable (consumable?) item to scan the current planet and tell you the weather patterns. This will allow builders to not pull their hair out, and also not require them to wait a few game day cycles to make really sure there's no bad weather. It also isn't necessary for progression, so players that don't care about building won't be negatively affected.
I love the fact that they included a meteor storm like they have. It makes you have to adapt to your environment and come up with new ways to survive. They could use a pre warning system to let you know when one is coming so you can get to your bunker but over all I like it
Had my first meteor strike on a new character. It killed me, blew up my farm and blew up my house. I'll just say that I didn't like it.
Thats the point your not supposed to like it and then use your resources to find a way around the problem. I had meteor storms on my starting planet that destroyed a pretty big complex that I had spent about four hours building then the storm came blew it to kingdom come and so I went damn that sucks ill have to do something about that. So i did I moved my base underground enough to where the meteors could not reach me and built a small wall above the ground to add some extra defense. havnt had a problem since
I enjoy the meteor showers. Got them on your spawn planet? Just destroy trees to make coal and find another one. One of the most memorable moments I have had to date in this game was when I saw a giant meteor come down and smash into the ground very close to me. I'm sure at some point there will be something like dungeon bricks put in that you can use to make a meteor proof barrier. Then there are mods. Also, know what sucks worse on a starting planet? Tiny almost invisible spots of poison water everywhere. Hit one of those while fighting monsters low end and you likely won't last long.... What to me sucks most of all is running around in my top tier human armor and having a castle glitch manage to one shot me (the charging horse makes sense but not the npcs).
I know it's supposed to be unpleasant, but come on. How many times have meteors wiped things out here on Earth? How many times does it happen per day in Starbound? It's just very common. I personally don't think it should be able to appear until you're prepared enough to do something about it. (For example, only in the Beta Sector.)
Well first off your comparing a event in reality to a even in a science fiction game so I cant really give you a answer. Honestly I think a early warning system either on your ship or in your base should alert you to incoming storms and then you could head back to base and wait the storm out.
Meteors in reality? Wipes out civilization extremely rarely. Meteors in Starbound? Wipes out civilization five times a day. See the problem yet? You can't *do* anything about them, and they're virtually *everywhere*.
Again Science FICTION game. plus early version things are not perfect, if you really hate it that much http://community.playstarbound.com/index.php?resources/&page=2 Here on this page is a mod you can put on your game where meteors dont damage blocks. took me five minutes to find problem solved
In my opinion, they don't have to be removed completely, but they shouldn't be on starting planets or respawn points. New players, and in a way new characters, just can't prepare for it.
It would still be nice if they didn't destroy absolutely anything in their path. If one block was added in that stopped them, I would be happy, even if it was those sewage blocks.
I see no problem with them. I kind of find it amusing, my character escapes the plight of his homeworld only to be killed by glorified space rocks. But that's just me, a being whose humor is apparently horribly misaligned with what's supposed to be funny. I will say though: I was under the impression that Meteor Showers were...you know...a natural phenomenon. Ergo, simply going to another planet wouldn't solve the problem at all, unless your planet has some sort of diplomatic immunity to getting pulverized by meteors. While I agree they should be less frequent, I think it would be interesting to see a dynamic furniture item of sorts that forecasts when they're about to happen (as well as tell you about rain and heavy winds, but that's not the point here.). Actually, it would be even more interesting if it was a type of wire sensor as well. Maybe one with multiple outputs for different weather conditions. For example, if it detects heavy rain, it sends out a signal which you could connect to drains/floodgates. In the event of a meteor shower, perhaps a small, force-field-generator-like item could be turned on, which blocks any meteors headed your way. I don't know how hard it would be to implement, but it would provide a gameplay driven solution to the meteor shower problem, while still keeping the challenge in place.
