Melee weapons are not very responsive

Discussion in 'Starbound Discussion' started by Moon Pup Martin, Dec 6, 2013.

  1. I use a combination right now. Sniper rifle, elemental spear, and shield sword. Dual wielding doesn't work as well in tactical situations, but it's still pretty damn fun.

I like the combat system so far, despite not having tons of experience with it. Each weapon type feels unique, and if one doesn't work for a certain situation then you pack another weapon to compliment it. It encourages variety, which is nice as opposed to having one weapon which does everything.
Naturally there's going to be a weapon which works the best generally, apparently it's the Two-Handed Swords. I use a Hammer and Bow, personally; I'm able to handle just about anything with them, apart from lag.

By the way i'm almost 20, i have only ever seen terraria played... and only like 3 times... i don't know anything about these other games, but a game can have a retro feel to it with modern mechanics. Please don't assume that you know the people giving feedback. This mechanic is a serious concern for me and i'm sure several other people

I don't mind things the way they are. If there's a ground-level charger I can use a sword and shield for the sideswipe and it works perfectly. Maybe jump over their head and get them in the back. If the enemy jumps a lot, a two handed weapon with a downward arc works best for me.

Or I could keep doing what I'm doing now with a sniper rifle and pistol/shield combo.

Melee weapons also have a pretty large delay before attacking when you switch to them.

Just because weapon area of effects are "limited" doesn't mean it's a bad mechanic. Look at Rogue Legacy. It became a hit almost overnight and the weapon swing is almost identical to a 2h weapon. It's meant to bring back the feel of retro gaming before there was such a thing as "smart" directional swings. At least I assume so.

In Super Metroid you can aim your beam 8 directions (Left, Right, Up, Down (when jumping) and diagonally up and down).

  8. Are you sure? I think George said something otherwise.

You can aim a gun in any direction you want in Starbound. There's a difference between projectiles and melee weapons.

That being said, I got my hands on a 1-handed sword and it's pretty clumsy compared to the 2-handed weapons. Takes some getting used to, so I'd say that the weapon animations need to be tweaked a bit so as not to discourage their use. I really see no issue with the 2-handed swords and hammers, though.

Edit: I'd say things that have "thin" areas of effect should have an aim system like the projectile weapons do. It might look a bit odd having the hand follow the mouse, but it'd be better than the run-and-jump game you have to play with the spear and 1h swords right now.

One think with the combat system is that u have a much bigger advantage if u using a ranged weapon then a melee one.
Like this pic, its really hard to hit enemies that are under you, u need to stand in front off it to get a hit with meele wep.
Soo i was thinking of maybe extend the swing soo swing 180° instead of 90°.

You can crouch while swinging as well. It will lower the hitbox a little bit.

I like the system so far. I can't just go in swinging my weapon like a derp. I actually have to think about it.

The problem with comparing it to games like Rogue Legacy or Castlevania is that those are games built with horizontal play primarily in mind. It's not always the case, mostly in Rogue Legacy, but usually when you're attacking something it's not going to be a problem to get it into your proper swing area. This game has areas that are all procedurally generated, meaning huge hills, valleys, and generally a lack of right-in-front-of-you-ness. Weapons like spears are only viable if you can get your enemy right in front of you, and because of the way terrain is generated that's not a frequent occurrence. Even if they don't make them omnidirectional, the ability to aim it higher or lower by at least some angle would do a world of good.

I really like how you managed to insult anyone who doesn't agree with you by saying they're 13 year olds and then also manage to jerk off your own ego by saying how great you are, all while being incredibly passive aggressive.

That's basically why I like the system as it is. You have to think about your positioning more when you attack.
Also, even though the one-handed weapons aren't as effective as two-handers, you can equip a shield with them, which actually gives you a choice to make, and one which I much approve of having.

yes but that means only a three styles of melee weapons out of a host of melee weapons are the only effective ones. And for a game with so many choices of weapons that is not a smart way to make the system. please check out my other thread and tell me what you think of it. they are simple changes that would greatly increase use of all weapons

Well I don't know, a weapon is a personal choice; if you like a pistol or one-handed sword + shield combo, then roll with it. Starbound isn't like Diablo 3 where if you use the wrong weapon you get your knackers chopped off.

I agree that it is a personal choice, but the problem i have is, due to the effectiveness of other weapons, most people unless the are just absurdly good at combat, are limited to a "personal choice" of 2h, hammer, or 1h+shield. I mean why can't i be just as excited with simple, but stronger spear, as a 2 handed sword that floods the enemy with poison every swing. I just wanna see a bit more variety and use in weapons. I don't want to look at any of them and say wow this seems hard to use. It was a waste of my time and effort to get this. I want every weapon to make me feel satisfied and not frustrated.
