Melee Vs Ranged

As of Right now i feel that melee has a major advantage over ranged combat and i will explain why i feel this way.

-My biggest gripe about the range vs melee topic is that energy is such a huge component when fighting that it doesnt allow for the extended use of guns or else your energy pool is spent in a matter of moments. Which lead to my next point

-Energy is much more effective with a melee weapon because melee doesnt use any energy which frees it all up for your techs which boost your fighting potential considerably where as with guns you are basically a sitting duck because you have no energy left over for tech powers.

-Melee weapons have ranged abilities attached to a good portion of them which are much better suited to ranged combat than the actual ranged weapons because they require no energy to use.
(I dont think melee should be nerfed or have energy requirements)

-So much of the game is played underground making ranged combat not nearly as effective because of cramped quarters and again energy needs to be saved for tech powers to escape hairy situations.

I know this is beta and i hope the state of guns (as i have found them right now) is buffed considerably in the future. Their energy cost needs to be reduced by a fair margin to allow for tech powers to be used in conjunction.

This is just my 2 copper ores on the matter anyways

I agree with these points and would like to add one more. Any gun I have ever found has been so ineffective that I could use my entire energy bar and at best do half the monsters hp in damage. I can understand them doing less than melee but there are few reasons to use a gun when melee weapons will do the job faster and safer.

What they tried to do is make a rough balance.
By giving each side a big disadvantage.

Meele weapons have only a single arc of attack.
While range weapons have a 360 Arc.

Then the obvious Meele weapons range vrs Ranged weapons
So to balance this point they tied it to energy.

    =============

Personally how I would do it is
Give Ranged Weapons Ammo - so they can fire as much as they want till their ammo runs out.
Then remove the ability to use shield when any range weapon is equipped

Then I would reduce movement speed for 2 handed range weapons
While increasing damage slightly to be a more practical weapon.

Then give meele weapons a chance to do random debuffs
While giving ranged weapons custom bullets which do debuffs. Another words the special ability of the gun is tied directly to the bullet.
And give legenday weapons only to give debuffs to standard bullets.

I realize they tied energy to weapons for balance but as of right now the energy costs need to be reduced quite a bit for guns to be a viable form of constant combat.

I use my gun at range then switch to my melee when the mobs close the gap.

Also the fact that any ranged attack seems to have like a 30% chance of not doing anything at all, even if it should have hit.

i thought guns didn't come till a later tier(armor tends to fix most energy usage)
but i find that getting wrecked by a range character is fun, it turns the game to a bullet hell and you really gotta concentrate to get the upper hand.
same thing the other way around, the ranged character has to lead his shots to be effective.

sure the damage is a bit wonkey but they never really got that issue down, adding bullets is not a way to fix that though.

for heaven sake...i asked my friend if he would burn money/resources for bullets and i got a big no. the fact that starbound did a wonderful job making each ore usable even in the later tiers(the ones that have been fully implemented, that is) made my entire team feel pretty happy.
each ore is useful, each pixel is useful. why would i waste all of it for some bullets that might not do anything?

EDIT: my friends tend to be pretty greedy when it comes to ores in most games(i noticed there was some priority when it came down to servers so i was uber worried.) but when they noticed that guns used energy and not bullets they sort of chilled out. the hoarding stopped and the ore was equally distributed.

i don't want to return to the dark days where ranged characters had to devour every ore/ collet every bit of loot on the planet so they could keep up the DPS and as a ranged character? i had to let them do it.
the team is only as strong as the weakest link and i wasn't going to be a jerk and not let him get bullet materials just because i wanted a shiny new hat.

You must be pretty early in the game if you think Early ores have any use later on.
The only use early ores have is pixel farms.

i beat the jelly boss and was in sector X.

sure the new ores sort of drowned out everything else but i pretty much used the ores for decorations, grappling hooks and other things of that nature.
like i said, established tiers sort of need them. i feel like once you get to the "Ore upgrades" you reached the unfinished bits of the game where tiers are unfinished and items of that sort are not fully completed.

that's just how i feel. i'm still always get some copper and iron and i'm on Cerulium tier.

I dont like the idea of adding ammo.
I like the fact that you can use guns at any time but the energy usage needs to be toned down or maybe they should implement a separate energy system for guns
