So what do we know about melee weapons thus far? I remember seeing the attack animation, and it looked like there was some wind-up before it was actually executed. Or am I just seeing things?

They swing, do damage and...wait, I already made this joke.

    Yeah, they're alright, I guess.

  3. From what I've seen the attack animations are swing - second of two of pause - swing.
This also depends on what melee weapon are you using because they have different dmg, swing speed, durability etc.
    Simple.

Everybody was melee fighting, those cats were fast as lightning. Seriously though going to be standard swing doubt there will be complex sword play.

There was plenty of melee fighting in the 14th of august's stream. There's a thread just below, look at it. A sword and a large axe can be seen. Also, chainsaw.

its seems it'll be a game of jumping/strafing/dodging from the start then when tech comes into play stuff will pick up! or at least that's how it seems so far.

Yeah, from what I saw from last nights stream, there is a swing and then a backswing.

Still, I hope melee is good in this game. The one flaw every game seems to forget is that Melee requires you to be face to face where ranged has the obvious advantage of being ranged. Usually balance suffers as a result, case in point late-game terraria, where melee just isn't as viable in practice since you end up dying a lot more. Ranged should always be somewhat weaker, or at the very least have a drawback.

    Ammo is a drawback.

guns don't use ammo ,they use energy the same way shields do.

    Nope.Some guns require ammo.

where did you hear that? from what i heard, everything uses energy for balance.

Not as long as it's plentiful enough to kill someone. Since all weapons in Starbound have a rechargeable energy source as their ammunition, it becomes possible to just kite/disengage while your batteries recharge.

There's another thing to consider, though, related to kiting. If everyone has the same maximum movement speed it'll be very, very hard for people to close to melee distance against someone with a ranged weapon unless there's some sort mobility boost unique to melee weapons.

that was 2012, things changed sense then. as the roadmap says

Gun weapons are fully generated, stats such as shot speed, shot damage, energy consumption, level, and more are configured dynamically. Each gun is given a generated graphic and name. A good first set of projectile mods has been produced allowing the different classes of guns to shoot many different things.

we have also seen the devs use energy and not bullet for guns/rockets/flame/energy weapons in the streams.

They are devs. They can use fish to cut down the trees and sand to shoot bladed glass spheres.Or something like that. This thread still looks more like ''nerf ranged weapon because we love melee and melee is the best''.

last night they played it without admin mode on and it still worked as i stated. ammo just isn't viable because it gives ranged players too much of a kick with such a big bang. energy consumption for everything(except melee fighters) works because you have to ration your energy for a prolonged fight.

Edit: i'm going melee just because the pace looks quicker(sniper = best side arm)

I've seen a PvP video between Tyi and - I guess - Mollygos. The melee looked pretty nice, and the weapons were pretty cool-looking :)

I'll be going melee for sure. Or melee in one hand and a gun in the other. It's not really useful, but damn it's cool.

    P.S.: Dual-shield for the win, bitches! :D

Swordplay is more Rogue Legacy style, rather than Terraria. It's kind of just an instantaneous swing, and each sword has a specific short cooldown before you can swing again.

My hope is that there is a method for "tanking" mobs, because in terraria late game melee dps wasn't viable except for dao of pow on the destroyer, and if you built tanky the majority of bosses could burst you down anyway, but I still found stacking defense the most viable for pvp.
