I think they're ugly and make the game look cluttered, if there has to be an effect for dangerous things I hope it becomes something more appealing to look at.

I believe you are correct. I think they represent status effects, I remember seeing Tiy get them in a stream when he got hit by a monster. How else would people prefer these be shown?

That could add a lot of surprise to the game. If there would be like background tentacles that come to life and grab you, or maybe some spike pits, some falling stalactites that drop on your head, maybe corpses that come life, posibilities are endless, jumpscares=priceless. :)

A few weeks ago i was asking in irc what the bones and skulls presents. They realy just mean hostile status. I hope they delet it from the game or make it optional.
If a monster is hostile against you, you will get it when it bites your ass...

I thought the skulls indicated that the mob was poisonous...

I think only poisonous stuff has that effect. I don't like it though, as quizok said surprises are nice.

Seems like a dev thing, to make sure enemies are properly hostile and to indicate terrain features, such as thorns, are properly damaging.
I think they should stay and that we should be able to turn them on and off in the option menu, simply to help newcomers.

Yea, I can totally imagine people start the game and go like "Woah, what a beautiful game! Everything looks so serene and peaceful. Oh my! Look at this cute red turtle! It's adorab- OH MY GOOOOD I'M BURNING I'M BUUUURNIIIING"

Yea, those people clearly would need a hostile indicator.

I think they are a good visual cue for when a creature becomes hostile. Otherwise, such as with randomly generated monsters, you might have no idea when something suddenly turns aggressive for some reason. Due to the animation limits, including visual clues like the skulls is a good way to get around this; breaking the 4th wall by showing the player something their character likely can perceive in another fashion.

Supposedly they're just for debugging to show aggro, and it won't be like that in the final game. I really hope so, because it's incredibly distracting to have the screen swarmed with little skull and crossbones. If they're going to leave them in, I sincerely hope they give us the ability to toggle it.

I don't think it should even be put into the game as a toggleable on/off option. Now, don't fret, there is some sort of reasoning behind that:

Hypothetically, think of toggleable auto-aim in multiplayer deathmatch FPS games. If nobody turns it on, hitting your enemy is entirely skill-based (with the usual scale of luck involved, of course). One would think this is how such a game is meant to be played.
However, if now only some people turn it on, they will have a tremendous advantage over the one's who choose not to employ it.

"If you lose without it, why don't you turn it on, too?"
Auto-aim is arguably NOT the way such a game is supposed to be played. One's own failure at proper aiming does not change that (I'm going with a tendency here - Of course this matter is somewhat subjective).
So if there is no auto-aim to begin with, this issue doesn't arise and people are forced to learn it properly, should they want to prevail.

I feel the same way about an indicator for danger. Isn't the fun in figuring it out yourselves, especially in a game, that's at least somewhat meant to be about exploration? This fun however, is effectively killed by giving the option to go "easy mode". There is no sense of achievement for the one's capable of distinguishing between dangerous and mellow creatures, if everyone else may "choose" to have floating skulls as an indication.

"Hey, this creature right here looks so cute!"
"Aah, don't touch it! It will explode and kill you!"
"Ah, don't worry, I wouldn't have gone close. It has skulls all around it!"
    "..."

(Now, I do understand that some, maybe beginners or one's who don't want to bother with frustrating monster experiences, would want to have the option to turn it on. But in the case of Starbound ... Why would you bite in a lemon if you hate sour foods?)

We don't even know for sure what they mean.
Unless I missed something? Did we get a dev confirmation about their meaning?

What's the point of a poll if all of the choices are biased against the feature. I want them in with no option to turn them off.

  16. I do not like them Casm I am, I do not like skulls and crossbones, man.

But seriously, they don't bother me too much, I don't think it takes away from the "hardcore" ness of the game.

I first want clarification of what they even represent before making a statement about them. If they honestly are something that ALL ''threats'' have then please remove them or give an option to toggle them. If they only represent certain status ailments or something then they're perfectly fine.

You can't just have the same effect be coming off of EVERYTHING. That's all I'm saying. I think it's common sense what is and isn't a threat to a person to begin with. Status ailments are the only things you need to keep track of somehow.

Exactly what I'd do if we dont have the option to turn them off. I think it's unnecessary but it's not something that's going to bug me much. If it does, theres the solution.

Please close this thread, the devs stated it was a PLACEHOLDER to indicate the enemy was hostile. it is only temporary and they pretty much took the only graphical effect they had laying around at the time for when enemies turned hostile in order to test their behavior. There won't be any turn on/off feature, and if such a small detail would make you not like the game then you are ridiculous.

Tl;dr > IT IS TEMPORARY AND WON'T BE IN THE FINAL GAME. END OF STORY, CAASE CLOSED.
