Race Meet the Oscura

I like it, good job on that.

 

I could see a dungeon for these guys being a dock and warehouse, with a cement mixer.

First up is more sprites by Sabre! Melee weapons this time.

You need to make a "Weapons/Tech" spoiler in the OP, to put all the new sprites.

Heya. LOVE the race.

I've been thinking about Psychology:

Maybe because they are a colony organism their mentality is one of general distrust. The Oscurian you meet 90% of the time thinks you are out to get them. They are always looking for an angle on motivations and actions. This ties back to their early proto-civilization when more aggressive Oscurians would EAT smaller, less successful ones. Absorbing and taking their skills and memories. As the race evolved past this early state they kept the wary nature because in the past your so called friend might just turn out to be an assassin. Eventually Oscurian social groups work around tightly knit 'gangs' who take on the same color and 'smell' meaning they are a social group. As their socity grew more advanced this convention extended to social groups like military, medical, etc. The advent of space travel caused this to grow more chaotic, but some social gang mentality remains.

Thoughts?

That's actually a pretty good idea. Might need a tad bit of fine tuning, but it'd explain a whole lot.

 

Ya. It was just rough off the top of my head. Obvious as they grew as social creatures both the urge to dominate and 'consume' continued. Maybe to include things like money, power, wealth. Every Oscurian has the urge to 'consume'.

 

So the reason why the Oscura are so successful is because the other races are superstitious and cowardly lots, is that right?

Not necessarily superstitious and cowardly, but it's best not to stir pots that don't need to be stirred, you know?
Nice sprite, though. Made me laugh.

 

I like the idea of the "Boss" being there as a protection for weaker Oscurians. The Boss offers protection of status, stuff, etc so other more successful members of the species don't claim it for themselves. I see early in their civilization that slavery would be common. (You know, once they got past the eating each other stage.) Mates would be tricky, both members trying to out maneuver each other looking for trust. True trust would be something precious to them. More than any riches.

Er, shouldn't the aviator goggles just be one lens instead of two, given that the Oscura have only one eye?

 

That is entirely true. Still, it looks pretty awesome either way.

 

I like the Novakid race, though to be honest i would have chosen this over them.

History
History was kept short and simple, i like that.

Biology
I gotta admit the structure of many small biological creatures compined to one working giant is admirable. Reminds me of The Thing.

Society
Story feels solid though, how will the Oscura handle space exploration if they tend to be cautios and suspicious towards other races and dispose out-of-the-box thinkers like rebels/renegade groups ?

Technology
Oscura technology has a certain steampunk feeling onto it. Fossil fuel power source seems rather ironical as their race is born from breed-able fuel.

Clothing
The feeling of the Oscura race is very intimitading looking and fits for 20s - 50s ganster style clothing.
I can't find words, you just nailed the right clothing type.

Body structure
Oh and the cyclop head looks very intimitading. Prehaps as you mentioned two eye variation head would be good to have for those who like less intimitading looking Oscuras.

Many thanks for the rather detailed compliment. As per your comments/questions, let me a address these two.

Typically, space exploration is handled by the military. The military follows some strict regulations and codes, and comes with lots of oversight. The primary function of the military is to scout and and secure resource rich planets, in the absence of any major conflicts. Typically, it's not just anybody going into space. Of course, the exception is when a new planet is secured, then some rather large craft bring over a lot of laborers. There's very little access to space by the average person.

It is a bit ironic, perhaps intentionally so. It was a suggestion for the race back when it was first being drafted up, and a lot of people were helping me out with it. Somebody proposed that they be made of oil, and it stuck so well.

Actually, Oscura technology seems more like dieselpunk instead of steampunk. I'd imagine that technology would be similar to what's seen in "Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow".
