Maybe waiting would have been better

So, I love starbound and especially with friends..but, I feel the game gets unneeded hate on steam and such because of the lack of content and updates. It's beta and you guys are working hard and even telling us what you're doing. But, all the crap you guys get on steam are driving away potential customers. I feel as though waiting to release when more content was available would have been a better idea. Or at least not putting it on steam for a while since most people here are competent enough to visit the site to see what you guys are doing rather than complaining about being swindled. It just saddens me that people are being this way; you guys are a fairly small indie company working on a big game and just because amazing updates aren't coming out everyday, people are crying left and right. I just feel instead of caving in and releasing so unnecessarily early, waiting would have been a better business decision. While I'm personally grateful for being able to play in the early stages, I just feel so many potential players were pushed away. And before everyone asks, no I was not one of the people that would complain on forums all day for Beta, I would've waited another couple years for a full release since I know these types of things tend to happen.

In the end, I hope the game does even better and gets better feedback when bigger updates come. It just sucks a lot of my friends were swayed away from this game due to negative feedback on steam by people who probably didn't even know this site existed.

Many claim that they hate the game and fire voleys of flaming Dog Sh*t at the game and Devs, but they will be here when the update comes, dont you worry:)

Pushing away players?I woudnt be so concerned, most just avoid the Early Acess and all the flak fired on the game wont make so much of a aimpact when it is released, since most of the complains are about slowness of development in Alpha anyhoo:p

Bah,just impatient lil buggers, they will come back, dont y worry mate

  3. pretty much this.

When it comes down to it, there is a small vocal minority on the Steam forums perpetuating their own hatred and paranoia. The only fault in their rambling, is that anyone who has the sense to actually look into what Chucklefish is working on will understand that the game is still being developed, exciting things are coming, and that the game still actually has enough content already to have fun with.

same. I haven't played in a long time, but I don't mind waiting. Back when starbound was the only game, I minded, but now that there are two games, I'm good to go.

Yeah I know it's a vocal minority, it just worries me since Steam is as big as you can get so that vocal minority can be a hindrance. Still, I'm glad not everyone thinks like that, I think it's a great game even with the lack of content. I tend to just get a bunch of coal and explore as much as I can

I picture in my head that the vocal minority is the same 5 people that make a big deal out of everything on the steam forums for every game in early access. They're a top-secret society [in my head.]

  8. No matter what the devs do, there will always be people who complain. That's just how the world is, really. You can't please everyone. Even if the devs decided to wait, there would still be people asking "WHEN".

Just continue to enjoy the game instead of having a few rotten apples ruin the experience for you.

IIRC, I believe the game was leaked earlier than intended, so they had to release some sort of beta, so I don't think they even wanted to release anything this early.

It's kind of hard to hate a game that hardly exists. What I hate is the fact that they did a bang-up job making this thing look fantastic for the Kickstarter, and $4 Million later the whole thing started to fall apart. I hate the fact that Chucklefish grievously overestimated their capabilities and promised things they can never deliver, or at least can't deliver in any kind of reasonable timeframe. I hate the fact that a game that was originally slated for release in early 2013 is is just now barely starting to qualify as a beta (I'm hesitant to even call it that much). And most of all, I hate that devs are allowed to charge people money for this bunk.

And finally, I hate that I fell for it and bought into the hype, literally. If nothing else, this has been a valuable lesson to me.

The game is still in development...doesn't sound like "falling apart" to me.

I guess you have a point here. That's why they don't do estimates anymore.

Like you said, the devs got overzealous with the estimations, but I think we should stop focusing on the whole "2013 release date" thing. It didn't happen and the devs acknowledged their mistake. Let's not dwell in the past.

I'm not sure what I can say about this. Personally, I don't find anything wrong with the game as of right now. It's not as if it's some completely broken mess.

To each their own, I suppose.

I remember when people were mad that beta was not out yet. Now people got beta but are mad the game is not fully done yet. I can't wait for the full game to be released and the same people will be mad the new content patch did not come out yet. To echo what most people on this thread have said I have not played in awhile, because I am waiting for the big update. I got plenty of things to keep me occupied until the mean time.

I am so eager to play the new features and I'm really excited for the outcome, but like most people I'm disappointed that it isn't moving faster.

Despite all this, I'm not gonna complain too much. I still play it a lot, and whining about it isn't gonna make the developers go any faster. If anything, I think they might go slower out of spite lol

I cringe everytime I look at the comments from the Steam Community. I feel like most of them are only angry because they don't know what's going on because they don't follow the blog posts or visit the forums. Anyone who tries to defend CF or at least calm them down on Steam just gets flamed to hell.

Most people either who hate the game either hate it because they think it is a scam or figure with enough malice and venom tossed their way the developer will be forced to kick into high gear and rush out the next patch before a meltdown.

Well anyone from here is considered a white night with a very brown nose if they have not been banned.

I did a post a while back how most all of the stuff going on now mimics the stuff from pre-beta. Also judging by some of the of the things I have seen used to prove CF's bad development practices some of the people are those who were ticked off at how long it took the beta to come out (Mainly based on one thing mentioning the "all the preorder money made the game come out just 27 days faster" thing).

It's just good old fashion FUD. This was the first EAcc game for a lot of people any their have been a few notable EAcc failures (and then some things that get lumped in like Towns which was NEVER in the EAcc program but is considered that style of game). People forget about the games that graduated the program and focus more on the fact it produced such junk as Earth: Year 2066. Kinda like how a lot of people mention crud like Flight Control and "Various flash platformers" as the only export of Greenlight despite some decent titles also coming from that venue. People are afraid that all of this was just a scam and since there is no legally binding completion agreement or anything that once the devs get bored or tired of working on this they can just pack up shop and reopen with a new title to toy with until they tire. The way starbound is being developed is pretty new and thus scary and in the absence of distraction the mind is left to wander and it begins to thing about how all this can go wrong and how this is so alien from the traditional pay once the project is complete method which is time-tested and proven to be safe. People are just scared in their rush to get a cool new game fast they fell headlong into a huge scam.

Wrong, a playable version (severely buggy and with a big chance to break a lot) is what you're maybe referring to, if I recall correctly it was the one played by the yogcast. Nothing was leaked to the public.
