I'm using this thread in an attempt to consolidate all known fixes for Starbound into a single thread/post for easy reference for new users. Hopefully this will allow everyone to reference this list first to find some of the more common issues.

Obviously as the Early Access goes on fixes will change and such. But I figure it's a good place to start.

Of course feel free to add any additional known fixes you might know about so I can add them.

The Basics

* Try reinstalling DirectX by going to

C:\program files\steam\steamapps\common\starbound\_commonredist\directx\jun2010\dxsetup.exe

DO THIS EVEN IF YOU ALREADY HAVE DIRECTX INSTALLED. This is a necessary step and if you skip it, the game may not work.

* Reverify your game cache

DO NOT run Steam as an administrator

Running Steam as an administrator may cause more issues. Run steam as a normal user.

Mac OSX 10.8 and above (Mountain Lion/Maverick)s Support Only

So far the game only supports OSX 10.8. You can update to OSX 10.9 Mavericks for free at the App Store

Disable the Steam overlay

* Find Starbound in your Steam Library
* Right Click -> Properties
* In the "General" tab uncheck "Enable the STeam Overlay whiel in-game"

Rendering/memory issues
Some rendering/memory issues may be solved by replacing your "starbound.exe" file with "starbound_opengl.exe".
To do this, you'll need to copy and paste the original "starbound.exe" into another folder to back it up, then rename "starbound_opengl.exe" to "starbound.exe" and try running the game.

Game hanging on logo screen
We're working on this, but some players are finding that if they just wait it out, they are able eventually to pass the loading screen and get into the game. Try it out!

Collorary fix

Low FPS on NVIDIA cards
If you're having low fps on Nvidia cards, try setting "multicore optimization" to no/off in the Nvidia control panel.

Oh, and let's not forget: if anyone finds that their streaming software or their Steam Overlay or puush are reacting slowly, they should go to their OS's Task Manager and change the execution priority of starbound or starbound_opengl to Normal instead of High.

 

Right now I'm kinda just 'brain dumping' fixes.

Once more fixes are correlated together I'll do a bit of cleanup

Note though that because I'm attempting to cross post between here and the Steam discussion, I don't want to have to do 'too much' fussing around with the base text between them. But if there are obvious formatting improvments to be had I'll have to see what is available here and maybe try to take advantage of them.

Please remove the 'Run as admin' suggestion, it causes more problem than it fixes.

I've put that in a 'spoiler' section at the bottom for historical reference, but it's removed from the list now.

Note though that a lot of people have to run steam as an administrator since that's a very common fix for other games. Should I rephrase the fix as "Do not run steam as an administrator" then?

as of angry koala, there are a few songs that crash starbound when you try to play them
(awake sweet love, bouree, sarabande, and sonata (zapateado)

easy fix for this: (make sure starbound client is not running)
open the abc file (located in your starbound\assets\songs\) with notepad
find the line that says

place cursor before the % symbol and press enter, so it looks like this instead now:

save the files and enjoy a crashfree music session

my $0.02 -- the parsing code for the keysignature line doesnt like having a comment on same line.. the abc file in angry is unchanged from previous koalas/lotro source

 

A little correction, OSX 10.8 is Mountain Lion if I'm not mistaken. Mavericks is 10.9, and the free upgrade is only from 10.8 too, as I'm aware. Correct me if I'm wrong.

 

You're right in that 10.8 is Mountain Lion and 10.9 is Mavericks, but you can download Mavericks for free from the Mac App Store on comps running even as far back as 10.6.8 (confirmed) but it may work all the way back to the introduction of the MAS. Currently there don't appear to be any issues running on 10.8.x as compared with 10.9+.

Yup, or download limits (it's quite large). Hopefully the game will remain working on 10.8 though, since I haven't been able to test whether my modded up old Mac can do Mavericks, and I have my doubts..

 

if you have a mac and you get the .DS_Store errors and want to delete all of those invisible files go to your terminal and put this command exactly as shown:
sudo find / -name ".DS_Store" -depth -exec rm {} \;
if it asks your password put it in. if you don't have a password you need to set it up because sudo commands don't work without passwords i think. i hope it fixes your problems cuz it did for me!

Thanks for the low FPS fix instructions, they solved my FPS issues. I never realized my Steam was actually running in compatibility mode lol.

 

For those that have access violations, I seem to have found that removing the files in the 'player' directory (these are your save files) to resolve this.

As far as low FPS for me, I actually lower the process priority to Normal, and FPS actually goes UP for me, the game doesn't stutter any longer. If it is of any use:

Intel E8200 (Core 2 Duo @ 2.66 GHz)
XFX 680i LT SLI
2x nVidia 280 GTs
4GB DDR2 800

It'd be great if we could have a giant red note at the top of the list that says something along the lines of

DO NOT EVER RUN STEAM OR STARBOUND AS ADMIN

It isn't a solution, and doesn't "fix" any other games. It just hides a much, much bigger problem that needs to be resolved by Valve: The Steam library should never be located in Program Files/Program FIles (x86). Steam itself should never be installed there, either.
