I'm torn between liking and disliking this idea. I'd love to make a moon, or make another smaller planet/asteroid into a moon, it would be great fun. As for why: the gravitational pulls would wreak havoc on the two environments. That being said, that is one factor that you are neglecting, at least as I read through I didn't find. Two gravitational pulls will have an affect on each other no matter what you try to counteract them with. Unless, of course, there's item X that produces Y effect for Z reason. Another thing that I don't like, as a personal choice, is the trash part. I'm big on recycling basically everything I don't want in a game that is based on farming material. If I can recycle an item for even one part, I don't like getting rid of it... but that's just me. But I do love the idea of making moons and being able to have a potentially huge impact on one (two potentially) planets.
also there should be NORMAL moons (aka random generated and why not adapt some of my ideas for planets into moons? ie rust moon!?!?!??!?)
Well of course there would be natural moons. It wouldn't make sense to only be able to go on the moons that you make, and images of Starbound that the developers released have already shown moons in the skies of planets. Also, although a rust moon is an interesting idea, I am not going to go through the forums and list every single planet and environment idea. I only put liquified's thread in the post because I saw his thread and thought it really fit in to my idea. On the trash issue, I actually meant for this to be a use for your junk items. Other games *Cough* Terraria *Cough* simply had a trash slot that you could put your junk items in, deleting the items and giving no benefits. This, on the other hand, would give an incentive to keep junk items and use them. I never considered farming for the items to launch into space - but I personally don't think it would be an issue, as creating your planet out of just dirt and stone probably wouldn't create a very exciting planet. You would have to put in a variety of items to have a moon with a lot of variety. (added bold to the main post.) On the issue of gravity... That is certainly something that I hadn't considered very much. The only issue of gravity that I included in my post was A new moon changing the planet's gravity is an interesting idea... But I personally think the idea should be implemented only if the player has a choice on whether or not they want to have the moon affect the planet's gravity, simply because the player might like the way the planet is. I think the extent on the change of gravity would probably be limited to simply weakening or strengthening the planets gravity, due to coding. Added gravity idea to main post.
I'm not entirely sure how this would work. We know that the star map is non-graphical, so how exactly are the moons and rings "visible" from space?
Links? I don't believe I have found anything where it specifically said that there would be no graphics on the star map. I like explosions, but this has been suggested in other threads, and I don't think it belongs here.
