You are walking around on a planet, your inventory overflowing with the various junk and treasures that you have found on it. You need to empty your inventory so you build --
    A Planet-Side Trash Launcher!
You could put your trash in this item, and it would launch it into orbit around the planet. This could even be visible from space. (See Liquified's Junk Planet Thread for examples). If you launched enough trash into orbit, than rings of junk would form around the planet. (Suggested by Aediion)
Eventually, after disposing of enough items, a MOON would form around the planet (Choosing to make the moon would be completely optional if you just wanted a place to dispose of your trash or you just wanted to keep the junk rings around your planet).

    This moon could be
    (A) A Junk Planet (See Liquified's thread about Junk Planets)
( Have an environment similar to the planet it orbits around.
    (C) Have an environment based on the items that you trashed (Trashing dirt, stone, flowers, etc., would make a more natural planet, while trashing more space related objects could make it a junk planet, etc.)
    (D) Have a completely random environment.
    (E) Once you launch enough trash into space to form the moon, you would have to launch a (fairly easy to get) item called a moon magnet. This would form a Junk Planet (see above). Then, you could launch a (fairly easy to get) item called a magma orb. This orb would melt the junk on the planets surface, and when all the molten junk cooled, it would form ground like the ground on a surface of a normal planet. This would be a lore explanation as to how ideas B, C, or D could happen.

These moons would have new treasures and loot to find, monsters and enemies to fight, etc. etc.
Their level of difficulty would be slightly higher than the planet that they orbit.
In addition, you could see the planet that the moon orbited in the background, and when the moon goes completely behind the planet, it would be nearly impossible to see--requiring that you have some kind of light source to even see at all. And lastly, when you are on the planet at night, you would see your new moon in the night sky.

    OR

    (F) The five, options I listed above (A, B, C, D, and E) are all ways the developers could implement what I like to call "Hostile Moons." Upon your moon's creation, you could choose to make your moon a "Hostile Moon" or a "Home Moon" a Home Moon would function just like your home planet, and could serve as your second base of operations. Of course, the amount of home moons that you could create would be limited. You would be restricted between having 0 and 2 moons depending on how far you had progressed in Starbound. That is, when you have low-level gear and have hardly explored any planets, you would be unable to create a home moon. Once you had mid-level gear and you had explored a substantial part of your galaxy/universe, you would be able to have one home moon. Once you had some of the highest level gear, plenty of monster kills under your belt, and you had seen the majority of your galaxy/universe, you would be able to create a second home moon (making a total of three home bases-Your home planet, and your two home moons.)

    Other Ideas:

None of these ideas are set in stone - they are simply other ideas suggested by me or other users.

    1. You could trash animals, influencing what species would show up on the moon (Suggested by NotAnAnon)
    2. If you make major changes to the moons surface (i.e. you build a large base on the planet, or make a massive crater with explosives) than the changes on the moon's surface would be visible from the planet. (Suggested by Inferno_Draconis)
    3. (See Above) Your changes from the moons surface would only be on one side of the moon right? Thus, since the moon would rotate as it orbited around the planet, the moon would look different depending on what night you looked at it (when you are on the planet)!
    4. If a planet has no moons that orbit it (there would have to be no moons so the code and lore wouldn't get too confusing) Then, there is a small chance (5%) that the planet will orbit around your moon. This chance increases the smaller the planet is!
    5. If you didn't want to form a moon, you could shoot your trash into the nearest star. (Suggested by Ozymandias)
    6. If you didn't launch a variety of items into space, you wouldn't get a moon with a lot of variety.
    (i.e. 100 dirt blocks = Dirt moon)
    7. (You could have the option to) have the moon affect the planet's gravity (It could raise or lower the gravity)
    (Suggested by Psylockeyuki)

TL; DR : You should be able to create moons that orbit around planets by launching your trash into space.

Please Comment on the idea, and suggest ideas on how to improve the idea if you have any.

  2. Love it! This would be a perfect use for all the junk items and debris from my adventuring and mining. I would definitely visit my moon to customise it, probably making it into a Death Star. :mwahaha:

Speaking of which, I think extensive alterations on the surface of the moon should alter its appearance when seen from the nearby planet.

I think this sounds pretty cool! Not entirely sure how doable it is, but nonetheless I would probably enjoy it. (Along with many other people)
My only thoughts on how it could be different is that option D is removed; why wouldn't you just go to any other planet for that effect? Option C is a great idea but I'm sure that it would be hell to code.

Wow guys! Thanks for all of the positive feedback!

Hmm... interesting idea... and I like it... But how do you trash an animal (Lore/Story Wise)?

Actually, this was what I meant when I said that the junk orbits around the planet. It's still a good idea, and I'll edit the post to make it clearer.

I love this Idea. Of course, since moon's rotate just like planets do, you could see different sides of the moon on different nights on the planet!

I do think that it is the least creative option:meh:. But I'm still going to leave it up there as it is a possible way that it could work.

New additions to the main post that I will add:
    1. Trashing animals
    2. Different sides of moon visible on original planet (Depending on what night it is)
    3. Moon's appearance (When seen from original planet) is based on how the moon actually looks (i.e. changing things on the moon causes changes in its appearance on the planet.)
    4. Option E) You could decide that the moon would be a second home planet--completely customizable and editable to your liking -- You could choose for your moon to be a "home planet" moon (Home Moon) or you could make your moon similar to a regular planet, (a hostile moon); this "Hostile moon" would be whatever one of the other Options (A-D) that they decided to implement if they did implement this suggestion.
    5. More clear that orbiting space junk could eventually become "Rings"

Err... I think that might get a little too complicated... Besides, generally, the planets gravity would be stronger than the moons, so any new moons created from the moon would probably just orbit the planet anyway. However lizard, this did give me another idea! :DD

Stuff to add to main post : If a planet has no moons that orbit it (there would have to be no moons so the code and lore wouldn't get too confusing) Then, there is a small chance (5%) that the planet will orbit around your moon. This chance increases the smaller the planet is!

    Umm... It does.

New additions to add to main post:
You could also choose not to make the moon and just use the item as trash disposal if you wanted to keep the rings.

once a moon is formed, will shooting additional trash into space grow it or begin the formation of another moon? Or would it be possible to do both through, say, an interface of the orbital trash launcher thing?

I like the idea, either way

  18. Ozymandias

    Ozymandias Scruffy Nerf-Herder

I would only like the idea if the ability to divert said trash into the sun were avaliable.
Then it would be fine because throwing stuff into the sun is always fun.

Other forms of trash disposal would of course be available in game if you didn't want to use this device. I will add to the main post that you will be able to launch things into the nearest star if you wish.

I think that there would have to be a limit on the number of moons orbiting a planet... 5 sounds like a good number. Unless the junk planet idea is implemented, I'm not in support of launching new trash to grow the planet. I decided to add to the main post the idea of launching a specific (somewhat easy to get) item into space, like a special magnet, that would explain the trash clumping together into a moon. Then it would form a junk planet. The you could launch, say, a magma orb into space, which would heat the moons surface and cause the trash on the surface to melt, and when the planet cooled, it would have a surface like a normal planet.

I really like this idea, would be fun to have a use for the hundreds of thousands of dirt blocks I have!
