Making a house in starbound is useless ?

Does it currently serve a specific, progression-based function? No.

Whether or not you feel that means "useless" is highly subjective. I find a house with rooms I can alter the dimensions of at will to serve as decor and storage quite useful and very gratifying on a creative level.

It should be noted that "renter" is in the plans for later updates, which will provide said progression-based function.

Sipher said it right. Just because the game doesn't require players to build doesn't mean it's not fun and cool to do so.

In the grand scheme of things, playing Starbound at all is useless. The only reason we do it is because it's fun, which is also the reason I build houses in the game. Decorating a ship, using vanity armor, giving your character a name, customizing your character's appearance - all of them are useless but fun things to do in the game.

currently building a house provides no benefit to progression, but a structure on a planet allows for more storage space then the ship does (while it does provide much, its still not infinite)
IMO building is a lot of fun and provides many unique challenges

later though you will be able to build things as a way to progress further into the game

I will say I'm not terribly fond of "build a bigger ship" as a progression gate, mostly because I'm not sure what I'm gonna DO with all this space. Right now It's nothing but storage with one workshop, as I'm only just starting to re-create my treehouse/compound from the EK build now that I've found a planet that suits my tastes. Once I got my home base? pffffffffffffffffffffffffffffff

I feel like "make the ship bigger" should be a secondary, non-mandatory option that's attached to the ship's other upgrades (unlocking new techs and tools and whatnot). I'd certainly do a couple, but man, what I got now is more than I need.

Well technically it is not "useless"
The act of building maybe enjoyable to the person doing it, that is more than enough for some people.

It simply just doesn't serve a game play element - that is all.
In the future there are plans of being able to rent out homes to npcs to gain money. The rent will factor in the items available in the room.

Personally building keeps me coming back. After finishing all the quests and getting all the ore I just build and then reset everything to start from scratch.

May i make a quick comparison to Terraria? I think it is a little unavoidable, because it has a similar flavor to it. In Terraria it is necessary, because you need Room for the NPCs you aquire. In Starbound you have a similar thing with the Villiger Spawner. The Trouble is, the Villigers do Jack Sh*t. I'm all for building in the Game, i like it very much because it is MUCH easier than in Terraria say or even Minecraft. But like many of you pointed out: It is in fact pretty useless as it is. You can do it all with your Ship. In fact it is more efficient to have the Benches and Smelters and whatnot on the Ship because there is the 3D Printer too. I think Chucklefish should give us more incentive to build a Base. But hey, in the meantime i'll come up with some pretend Reasons to build stuff, because it's fun :)

I'd like to notice that some seeds do not grow (or do not seem to do so) on board of the ship, so if you want to craft some specific food, you're gonna have to build a farm of some description on a specific planet type. Therefore while not necessary for the progression, building planet side serves *some* purpose.

Building a house has it's advantages. You can't build big tree farms in your ship afterall.

I've got a considerable farm in the caboose of my Novakid's space-train. I have never found a plant that won't grow in it. I've grown everything from Avesmingo to Toxictops with no trouble. Some plants are really slow to grow (Pussplum! ARGH!) but none actually refuse to. If you're having trouble with some plants refusing to be planted, it's likely a space or spacing issue - most plants require a 2-wide by 6-tall space to be planted, with the bottom two blocks resting on plowed dirt, though I remember banana seeds requiring a taller area.

Building a planetside farm is necessary if you intend to plant or grow trees though. I don't think there's room enough to even physically grow a tree on a ship, even in the tallest car of a Novakid space train. Further, building on a world provides you with a lot of storage space, letting you devote less of your ship for storage and more of it towards doing interesting things. So while I don't think building planetside is useless, I will say that it's certainly not required for anything.

True but you don't really NEED a Tree Farm. Just swing your Ship by a Forest Planet and Boom you're set.

I have used my first planet as my main base with all my benches and storage and where I collect and planet trees and food from all over the universe. All my characters can use the same planet.
Though at times I wish there was a check mark "start on new unexplored gentle star" for a new randomized start.
The big problem I find is some recipes stay on older benches. If they had better tech tier separating tabs other than just rarity on more advanced tables, I wouldn't need as much space.

I'm about to dedicate myself to rebuilding the Hylotl race one underwater city at a time. I also roleplay with a couple of my friends on our server, so building stuff becomes an important part of the story. So far, I've found my ship upgrades mostly useful to show-off to friends. I've been trying to set up some rooms for mildly important NPCs. So far I've only got a doctor from a spawner dropped by the Apex lab mobs (I think). It's a bit underwhelming 'cause I thought he'd at least heal me instead of just selling overpriced medicine. So, to recap: bling!

I love to build as much as the next guy (my fuel silo!) but I hear what the OP is saying. Building would be enhanced and so much more rewarding once there is a reason to do so. I'm still on a mission to get trade posts in the game! Especially now that specific planets have unique resources. I just think the ability to set up an automated trade route from plants you build posts on to your home planet would be awesome. But they are still doing the whole "landlord" system where you can charge rent to NPCs and bring in sustainable income, right?

I'd love the heck out of transportation systems. There's a crafter/tower defense game out there which I can't remember the name of, but basically uses a system of moving belts and robotic arms to automate harvesting and production and transport stuff to where you want it. And the concept is extremely awesome.

Right now you can only have one Home world.

But if they ever add a series of bookmarks, and make several renewable resources grown only on certain planets, then it may be worth making several houses on different planets.

I wholeheartedly agree. I love building. But man that ssship is huge, and it looks bad to leave areas untouched.

It really depends upon what you expect from the game.
For me and my friends, Starbound actually is all about building. The other gameplay elements, like questing etc., are amusing, but we play Starbound to build, that's the main fun for us.
