It is not weird or anything, It's advanced SF, I can order my clone to look any way I want! Even if it includes other gender. But there is always "this guy" who will ruin the fun for anyone and spend all his live trying to make devs remove this option. I saw this happen too many times to even have hope.
Even though they don't really have a reason, they're just against it because they don't like it. People need to stop shoving their dislikes on stuff like this down other people's throats. The option is there, the >option< to change your character's gender. You are in no way forced to change your character's gender any time you use this pod. It is your choice, so if you don't like it, don't do it. Plain and simple. And it really is just that simple. There's no need to crusade against it. And if it's attention you're after by doing the crusading? Please find a >constructive< way of attaining it.
You mean "try to ruin the fun." They can whine all they want - it doesn't affect my game (and I get a kick out of watching them squirm). I like this idea, and want to see it in the game.
I like this idea, although for me the mods I'd do would likely be constrained to hair-style (or leaf-style, as I mainly play Floran) and coloring.
I'm the opposite. I don't get a kick out of watching them squirm. I get a kick out of everyone being able to enjoy the damn game.
How does having the option to change a gender prevent people who don't want to change gender from enjoying the game?
The truth though is that some people really do have reasons for their thoughts. Those reasons usually stem from their upbringing. For example: I was brought up in a home where things like gender-swapping (and furthermore, homosexuality) were very negative, borderline-evil, acts. On the other hand though, I was always taught to respect other people's opinions, even if they conflicted with my own. Then there's the "issue" of the current generation being more open and accepting of gender-swapping, etc. But what most people don't realize is that this acceptance is still a very recent development, and most of the world is still working with many generations worth of, very similar, social standards. Most of the time these standards are those of having more modest and pure thoughts/actions. i.e: Men dress like men, and men don't date other men. Whilst I myself am personally against having a gender-swapping option added, I don't see much point in being against it if I can just choose to play as a woman from the get-go (being a male myself, I prefer to play as a male character, but there are times when a game's protagonist is female and I must simply deal with that, or if the female characters have different bonuses and abilities I can make use of). In any event, I do like the idea, but there are a few major drawbacks to this plan: 1- If you can use the machine to change the look of your clothes, it completely nullifies the use of clothing vendors and the yarn spinner (or whatever it's called). It would really be more of a wardrobe function though, which I'm entirely on-board with. 2- If you WILL be allowed to change your gender, then it becomes more than simply a "makeover" device (minor naming technicality, these things just bother me). 3- If you are allowed to change your entire appearance, possibly including gender, it can then be concluded that you should be able to change your race as well (and possibly your name too, cause "while I'm at it..."). This then becomes a new problem because it would require a rather large bit of re-coding, mainly for crafting recipes of things like weapons/armor/etc that vary between races. Did I ever mention that I do still actually like this idea? Anyways there's my 2 cents (or more like 20). Also: I was pissed when I slept for the first time and found out my undies were yellow, cause I couldn't tell what color I'd picked during creation.
Craftable tech for the robotic crafting bench? Or would it be sold randomly by vendors? Personally, it would be awesome to be able to transfer my character's brain into a "shell" of another species. Store the real body somewhere safe, while I control the "shell"? Maybe you wouldn't need to grow a clone or something of a person to make it, and instead make a shell like this:http://ichun.us/mods/sync/ Which is a minecraft mod where you can make a clone of yourself VIA robots, and it has its own inventory.
when you die, you get cloned anyway... so when you get cloned from scratch with just you DNA, I don't see why you can't change sex of the character aswell. Just add/removed a cromosone, that's all
I'm for the suggestion; I actually think of it pretty often! Especially something like hair colour. When I find new armor or something, I'd like the option to change my look if that would help anything. Yes, even gender, I see no reason why not. Humans for one are already being reconstructed all the way down to the skeletal level for the respawn animation. With the current state of the game you really are using your character for the long haul, and a chance to spice things up would be more than welcome.
It's just something that I personally would find weird and just wouldn't use, from an RP point of view.
Maybe you'd need to die in order for the changes to actually occur? So like, next death you have a nice beard instead of that naked chin?
I can see you've forgotten about obsessive compulsive disorder. No game designer wants their game to lose customers because of taking a stand for or against some heavily debated issue or widespread stigma that has absolutely nothing to do with their game, and thus the easiest course of action is to not trump it up in their game. This would be doing exactly that. In other news, not even the Apex have gotten a handle on DNA manipulation (otherwise they wouldn't be ape-people) and so I find it hard to believe the player is the smartest being in the universe, given that the Apex are the designated super-intelligent race. Gender changing is a serious surgery that cannot be done repeatedly without serious health complications (since DNA manipulation isn't an option) and permanently changing skin color would require DNA manipulation as well. Also, Florans. Just try examining something with one. Hair and hair color makes sense. As for underwear color, that is a task for the yarnspinner, not a barber machine or genetic pod.
Yeah, I would love this. You have no idea how many times I've wanted to change something about my character to fit a vanity set or something similar. Maybe it could be something akin to how SR3's plastic surgery clinics work.
Right... Whatever justifications are needed to take away from character freedom, which this game seems to try to boast so far anyway. If a game is going to lose customers because they don't like that the game has the option to change your NOT REAL characters sprite from male to female, them I'm sorry... those people have got bigger issues to work out. Including it for people who want it as an option does not mean it's mandatory for people who are either ignorant, prudes, intolerant, or for some stupid reason outright disgusted at changing a pixel characters gender, and it shouldn't matter to those people how someone else plays their game, and what they do with their character's appearance. This is a sci-fi game where none of us know the limits of scientific breakthroughs, therefor I don't think your trying to be in tune with the lore explanation fits as well as you'd like it too either. Oh look... a perfect example of how it's not as big of a deal as people here insist that it is.
