Make bosses optional

Yeah, why i have to beat the boss to travel further? What's wrong with all those sectors? It makes game very linear and kills feelings of free exploration (now game-flow reminds me a classic platformer game with levels). If beginner player wanna go to very dangerous place — so it's player's problem.:viking:

Why new ores/loot makes you abandon previous sectors just because they became useless/weak? A-sector is place of weaklings(and killer-birds in style of Hitchcock) and so on — that's strange. What makes things to be that way?

Why not add meaning to all sectors(now it's just different levels in platform game). Maybe make them equal to each other, add rare ores on each planet but setup some restrictions on mining. More rare ore may be on more dangerous planets but in one sector with others.

Fighting the bosses may gives other benefits like spaceship upgrades(not interfering in walk-through), new side-quests, new rare schematics, etc.

To me, boss fights seem to be the best way for someone to prepare themselves for the next sector that it unlocks. You wouldn't be able to take on a new sector if you can't even kill the boss that would unlock it. Making bosses optional just seems... silly to me. This game is a platformer, so I don't see why it shouldn't share some of the nice features that are included in most. Imagine if on Mario bros the bosses were optional, who would actually fight them when they could just save time by skipping?

    Gods no.
Why would you have an RPG game where you HAVE a boss, but you don't have to fight it to progress? I can't think of any RPG that's ever had that. Bosses are there to measure progression and give some kind of reward.
If anything, bosses should drop a progression item, and a reward item. Even if that reward item is only a vanity piece.

This - Is not an RPG. It is a sandbox exploration, survival and building game.

And no - I don't like the idea of mandatory bosses either. I'm a space explorer, not a hero stereotype.

What, you mean so that you could get coordinates to a highest level planet and find a bunch of OP gear on it then come back and fight them later no effort required? That sounds like a terrible idea.

It's a 2D Sandbox RPG, just like Terraria was. It has progression, and thus it has bosses to mark progression.

First of all, there are literally dozens of planets to explore in a single sector, if you dont care about the difficulty or whatevr go explore those.
    Furthermore, worst...idea.....ever....

That does not make it an RPG...

The reason you have to fight the bosses is because if you CAN'T beat the boss then you can't handle the content after it to begin with. The game isn't "explore everything! =3". It gets harder and harder as you explore "further". The game is progression-based, not "do anything you want, when you want".

If it is, then it's really big disappointment to me. I waited for two years to play it. Starbound advertise itself as free exploration game. Now you tell me, that explorations must have limits. Great!

Also it was partially advertised as an RPG. Just saying.

That doesn't make it any more true.

But it is - It IS explore everything. Remove the bosses and nothing is stopping the player from progressing naturally by advancing their gear and ability to handle enemies.

Everygame is an rpg. Role Playing Game. You have a character that you make and blablabla.

    Anyway.
If you are complaining about the fact that there is progression in a game I think you might nee to go play something like space engineers.

    You can't claim it isn't a platformer...

Ok, I don't understand the logic behind this thread.

Make difficult bosses optional so I can just go straight to more difficult planets.

We don't need to make sectors equal, simply because one sector has tons of unique planets to begin with, so there's no lack of content.

This ^^^ Space Engineers is a great game for those who don't like fighting and just want to explore.

One sector alone would take over 20 hours to explore all of it's content. How the hell are you people complaining about being "limited" in terms of exploration. The bosses don't hinder exploration, they contribute a countless number of extra content to explore once the player overcomes the challenge of defeating them.

Also: Just because your player has to defeat bosses doesn't make him fall into the "hero stereotype". Hell, the first boss the player encounters is because it picked up a signal from his distress beacon...

Encountering adversity and overcoming it is what makes any great game fun.

I'm fine with bosses being a gate. They just need to make them feel less like a gate. Maybe make them drop something more than "Crafting Item X". Or change the way the do the gating, so it feels like all the sectors are open from the start.
