right now it seems that (almost) all of Starbound is about technology, (besides the sorcerer scroll) just wanted to ask you if you would like to see magic stuff implementet in the game or you would prefer to some magic (magic rings or Trinkets like Terraria) or would prefer to keep it the way it is?

I think that there should be technological magic, like nanobots but not real harry potter kind of magic.
    Also i agree with Whaleduck.

Technologic magic is when you can point a laser pointer at a wall and suddenly 5 minutes later a plate of waffles falls on the couches armrest right beside you. the best part is that when i am finished with my education i will have the knowledge to make that happen :p

Was thinking the same! Scientific magic is awesome! I agree, just wanted to see what other ppl thought about this topic

I usually prefer high fantasy over science-fiction. That being said I don't want to see any magic in Starbound aside from mods. I want to see what can be accomplished without simply falling back on "magic." We have a wonderful opportunity here to explore high science fiction; anything that magic can do we can achieve with fictional technology.

Conjuration? Build companion and battle droids. Or use the (already implemented) system for pets! Hell, lets bio-engineer them!

Illusion? Give me stealth techs and holograms.

Evocation? Destructive magic? That's what rocket launchers, plasma weapons, lasers, grenades, etc etc etc. are for

Scrying? Spy drones and scanning tools. Give me tech that lets me see outlines of enemies through thin walls, or tech that gives me a minimap!

I could go on, but I think you get the idea. I don't want to see the Starbound experience diluted by two different competing systems. Sure, magic in space is fun (see: Starjammers) but part of the allure here, for me at least, is seeing what can be done WITHOUT magic. What can be done without simply saying "magic did it?" Give me Star Trek-style techo-babble!

I love your thinking, so allow me to add a few magical schools.

Divination: could be basically what you mentioned in Scrying

Enchantment: different types of emitters to different items, like oil to a blade for fire or voltage for shock.

Does anybody watch Adventure Time? So you are saying it should look like magic but should have a psydo scientific explanation? The more I think about it the more I like it to keep magic away from Starbound (besides mods). While Starbound has some Paradoxons (the races often seem way to underdevelped for spacetravel) taking the easy way out and just explaining things through magic would be boring how Jason pointed out.... Does anybody know how to add a pole to this thread?

EDIT: you can explain everything through Quantum mechanics (thinking about bioshock infinite). EVERYTHING.

Adding to this: If, during quests or story or through simple exploration, you come across something that *seems* mystical (e.g. a powerful man at the head of a cult supposedly using magic to further his ends) I think it should eventually lead towards a scientific explanation; he was tricking people. Some ambiguity is okay, and certainly lets see some faith-based usage of technology (endoctrinated Borg, anyone?)

But I don't think magic in Starbound should be anything more than a hint, with the easiest conclusion being "there's a man behind the curtain."

IMO, any magic at all should be restricted to special NPC races, like eldritch beings or beings who are like the Q Continuum.

I am cool with telepathy/psionic "magic" though.

what would be the use of telepathy? you can already lift objects with your matter manipulator....
Maybe it could be a tech to push away Enemys... (would be cool for ppl who like guns)
