Closed [Mac OS 10.9] Starbound worked ... now it won't launch

Starbound downloaded from Steam fine, ran fine (apart from the bow crash bug on Mac which I was ignoring).

After messing around for a while, I decided to get rid of all characters I'd created and start again. A quick look on the forums showed that I could do this be deleting files in a folder called 'player' inside of Starbound's local files on Windows, and I assumed the same would be true of Mac OS.

Used the 'brows local files' option from inside Steam, found the player folder, saw three files for each character (random string file name + some other information). Threw all files in Trash, emptied Trash ... broke Starbound

It refuses to load. Clicking Play from inside Steam causes the penguin icon to appear in the Dock, and then close itself. No error message is generated.

Deleted entire title from Steam, redownloaded, issue still occurs. No Starbound.

Steam just downloaded a 550MB patch to Starbound in the last five minutes, but the issue continues.

 

As a quick additional note, Verify Game Cache reports no errors and does not try to download any files again.
