    I'm still getting this problem.

I have downloaded it on another mac (2012 Macbook Pro) and the game works fine. On that computer there is a .config folder in the user directory, exactly where it should be. There is no .config folder in my user directory. I don't know if this is a bug in the installation script or something specific to my computer, but any thoughts on how to work around this would be great.

UPDATE: We just copied the .config folder from the computer that it worked on to this one. Works now. No idea why it didn't install it in the first place, but that did it.

          1. First, try running the game as root. If that works, then to fix the black screen issue you just need to set the owner of .config to yourself.
          2. Otherwise, check inside .config/StardewValley/ for a file called "startup_preferences". If it exists, delete it, and then try running the game.
          3. If that doesn't help, rename your .config folder to something else (if it exists). Then create a new folder in your home directory named just ".config" (without the quotes). Then try running the game.

If none of those help, post in this thread with what you tried.

Can someone explain how to use the terminal and how to view the hidden files?

edit- I figured out the terminal thing but it didn't help me!

Once you've started Terminal (eg, open spotlight by clicking on the magnifying glass in the top-right, type Terminal, and press enter) you can fix the common causes of the black screen by pasting in the following three commands. The first command starting with sudo will prompt for your login password, but the second shouldn't as it'll be able to reuse the credentials.

              sudo chown -v "$USER" ~/.config
              sudo chown -Rv "$USER" ~/.config/StardewValley
              rm -f ~/.config/StardewValley/startup_preferences
