    checking this folder permissions use

'ls -la ~ | grep .config'

    you should see something like
    'drwxr-xr-x 17 <youruser> staff 578 8 Jul 21:40 .config'

    if you see

    'drwxr-xr-x 17 root staff 578 8 Jul 21:40 .config'
    or
    'drwxr-xr-x 17 root root 578 8 Jul 21:40 .config'

Then you will have a problem.
Its looking like some old/other game was creating that folder with root privilages.

Nice. Interestingly I also played Dwarf fortress with therapist. Will check when I get home but we may have found the link here.

If the .config folder in your home directory is owned by root then you will need to change that. It should be owned by you not the root user.
from the terminal you can use

        'sudo chown <yourusername>:staff ~/.config'

Tried 'sudo chown <yourusername>:staff ~/.config' (with my username of course =p)
no joy still black screen. I noticed that the folders inside '~/.config' were requesting root access to delete though so uninstalled StardewValley on steam and manually cleared all folders out of '~/.config'

I tested by adding a blank new folder in finder and it allowed me to do that without root access and same for deleting it.

Then reinstalled Stardew via steam and all works fine now

Thanks dellis... owe you a million pal.

          {in case you are interested i had DF Dwarf Therapist files inside that folder as well... and I do recall that Therapist required a root password to run since it was intercepting data from another program. Some dodgy permissions but that's all cleared out now}

Sounds like Dwarf Therapist is the culprit. Glad we found the issue.

It was Cheat Engine for me.

So I might be doing something stupid but there doesn't seem to be a .config folder anywhere. Checked around in my home directory, library, etc, Terminal also didn't find anything.

I'm running Yosemite (10.10.5) if that's any help.

It should be in your home directory.

Maybe you already know this, but the "." in ".config" hides the folder. In your file manager there might be an option you need to turn on to display these files. In a terminal, "ls" alone won't display them, you'll need to do "ls -a" or "ls .config".

Reply if you're getting the black screen issue and you still can't find your .config folder.

I can see the hidden files, there's no .config there. Terminal didn't find anything using those commands, just other "." files and folders. Still getting a black screen.

                      Console shows the following:

The line I posted before was just repeated in console, there wasn't anything else.

I also found this, I don't know if it's what you're looking for, I'm not entirely sure where to look for them.

                            Code:

                              IT FIXED!!! So... I'm dumb. Here's what I did... I followed u/ Elakin's post on page 1.

                              1. Open Terminal
                              2. Type in the following: sudo mv -i ~/.config ~/.config.disable
                              3. Close Terminal
                              4. Play Game. :)

Still getting a black screen, tried the steps posted above and terminal still couldn't find the file. Just noticed that while in the game the apple logo in the menu bar disappears, which I don't believe was happening before. When I click on it my computer lags quite a bit, though eventually it shows the menu.

Which version of OSX do you have? The minimum system requirements right now are 10.9.

Could you post the whole log file? It might have more information than was just printed to the terminal.

The log files should be in /Users/<yourusername>/StardewValley/ErrorLogs/

So when I go into my user directory there isn't a folder for Stardew Valley. There is one within Steam's Application Support folder, but no error logs there that I can find, just content and resource files for the game.

                                          I'm also having this problem.
                                          'ls -la ~ | grep .config' gives me: drwxr-xr-x 5 <Use_name> staff 170 Aug 17 20:20 .config

                                          there are no error logs.

Just deleted "startup_preferences" and that fixed it.

As far as I can tell what has caused this for me was the recent update to steam.
