Loving the new bird AI and scaled fall damage!

I actually find the birds extremely annoying now in the beginning before you find any guns (no I am not including the slow firing hunting bow). Nothing annoys me more now than trying to build something and having the darn things continuously attacking me.

lol, yeah, they got me a few times when I had only my starter weap and no ranged, and when I wasn't prepared. And they swoop in from so far away.

I still prefer it to the old birds who pretty much ignored you unless you Pulse Jumped right into their faces :)

I would love it if not all the birds attacked you when they barely see you though. Sure them being more hostile like the ground enemies is nice, its just can't we have some passive birds too?

    My only deaths this patch have been to killing birds and them falling on me. I'm serious... T_T;

    Yep. :)

Yeah, when I'm in combat and get knocked back, I can't really place blocks in time. But that's not even the point. If an enemy pushes me off a cliff, I SHOULD take damage. But it seems to me that we take damage from falling off shallow ledges.

@Neffzwei yeah my post wasn't directed at you, but at the people complaining about how hard it is to avoid fall damage. The old one was infinitely worse, I totally agree with you.

They could maybe tweak the aggro distance a teeny bit; they do attack from quite far away now. But I still prefer extreme long range aggro than their old 30 cm aggro, hehe.

Maybe, but having extreme range aggro is about as bad as having extremely short range aggro, heck the birds have sniper range compared the ground enemies. Not to mention having all hostile birds is a little weird, I mean imagine if all the ground enemies were hostile and you had no passive ones?

I like the change to the flying creatures but I think they should perhaps spawn less frequent.

I can't quite tell if they spawn more now or if it's the same amount of birds, and they mostly just flew way overhead before and it seems like more because they all fly lower and aggro now, but I think it's the latter.

Birds following you further when you harass them is cool, but my experience so far is that pretty much every bird tries to kill you. I don't know how many of you have played Morrowind but I feel like they will quickly become the next 'cliff racer'. I'd just like to see a little more diversity. A group of birds to hunt you down, a different type that are just a little more territorial, and then some that just happily fly around without a care in the world. Never posted before, this inspired me for some reason.

Agreed. Fall damage in this game has always been pretty over-the-top but this is bananas.

At least it can be altered client-side if it's intolerable. It would be nice if this would be changed as a core mechanic, though (or IMO just get rid of it).

I have seen a little variety. Some birds are still passive and don't aggro. Some use steam attack and bubbles, others also have divebomb. Some explode when they die, some don't. But yeah, pretty much all of the enemies could use a little variety in the AI. Seems like almost every monster has Charge and Body Slam :) I am sure we'll see a lot more diversity in the later stages of the beta.

I agree with this, I haven't seen one passive bird yet. All the ones I have seen are 'cliff racering' it up when the see you. It's all "Skree! Skree! Skree!" here comes a group of two or three birds from off screen that you didn't even see.

For me, I was strictly speaking of their behavior. I've been non stop impressed with the types of attacks. Mixed feelings about their ability to hurt you after they die. I get the whole falling out of the sky argument, but maybe they could show it with a little more clarity? I mean we spend a lot of time digging upwards and having other stuff fall on our heads without any penalty. Why is it some birds hurt us and others don't. *If They all hurt you after you kill them I apologize that just hasn't been my experience*
The idea of poisonous birds bursting into a poisonous cloud at death and damaging anything around them or something to that effect would be cool, but at the moment it seems to be lacking consistency and clarity in terms of why some birds hurt me when they fall.

There does seem to be a little lightning discharge when they explode. It's not all that noticeable, though. I've just grown accustomed to always dodging the falling corpse, lol.

Another thing that still gets me is the guys that shoot the acid balls that explode after a few seconds. Derp! :)

The only thing that gets me is when they barely pop on screen, and then decide to attack you. They do have nice attacks, though they have way to much range.
