So, after I found a way around the XP crash issue (thanks to someone in these forums), I FINALLY got to play it.
Loading? Went fine, took between 1 and 3 minutes to generate universe files. But in-game experience? AWFUL. There was a lot of "lag"/slowdown, regardless of OpenGL use. During those slowdowns I also noticed it sometime got a key "stuck" (if you were holding left or right, you'd continue drifting left/right for TWO SECONDS). No graphical nor audio abnormalities were witnessed.

Is any optimization going to happen?

But, for a matter of fact, noticed something important! setting RenderPriority to False has cut some of the lag/slowdown even at 2x zoom!

Well, beta performance has been poor on some absolutely powerful systems too.. Hard to bughunt or happily dream up suggestions at 5-10fps :> I think the total lack of graphical de-hancement options (zoom level/resolution so far) is a part of this.. I have terrible lag when exploring "new" areas, though I often imagine these are caused by hidden chunks of NPCs or monsters I'm not finding.. Also, the first boss and all the lights/particles it creates had me crawling slow, which had me worried that maybe my pc wasn't good enough for Starbound.. But after the boss fight (and after killing all its leftovers) the terrible lag persisted anyway, which I actually was happy about this time because it meant something optimization-wise was hanging around after the boss was dead and gone. Rain slows it down pretty badly also.. I think, after outright crashes/incompatibility, that graphical reduction options (concerning backgrounds, particles, lighting quality, weather quality, amounts of useless non-quest non-shopkeeper NPCs) should be the next big focus besides "trimming the fat" out of the code in the needed areas (hopefully some of those areas include backgrounds, particles, lighting quality, weather quality, amounts of useless NPCs :D)..

    Godspeed, devs!!
