Lore and Motivation

nobody knows any reason for summoning any of the bosses yet (bar one)- there is no motivation that matches ANY lore because at the minute there's absolutely NO background behind it. The only part that makes sense is the first encounter - distress beacon gone wrong...coincidentally the only boss encounter with quests written around it.

If you're roleplaying surely a small amount of imagination is a must? This stage of the beta should be a dream come true for roleplayers because you have a blank slate to work with...

My human summoned the bone dragon because he found a group of Florans hoping to hunt and slay the beast themselves. He could probably get the support of the floran by impressing them with a legendary hunt. These particular florans have a pretty impressive armada and the ships would undoubtedly help in taking back earth...Thats his particular motivation right there...

How will digging ore lead you to your creators? My glitch is gathering resources to survive in a difficult and perilous sector of the universe. Having encountered many settlements in search for clues (some of which have been guarded by evil scary beasts - a giant floating jellyfish was guarding an ancient robot prototype!!!) I've been led to the X sector...i'm just searching planet by planet, fighting, finding and cajoling my way to the information i seek! Trouble is, to survive in this perilous corner of the universe, i need armor, weaponry, fuel, a place to gather my findings etc...

I don't roleplay and i have the imagination of a 28 year old lazy idiot :p...so the above is absolute rubbish! but 2 seconds to imagine my own motivation and suddenly my actions fit the lore.

Florans have a lore reason to hunt the bosses. To have a glorious hunt, and thats the point I was driving at. I only responded because Dread Pirate Roberts was unconditionally and unreasonably rude. Imagination and roleplay is all over this game, and you can find a reason to do any of the stuff you want. Im just saying, lore wise there isnt anything for anybody BUT floran. Hunt the bigger things, dig to get bigger things to hunt bigger things, Sssstab. I understand what you're saying, both points are not exclusive.

My response was purely in regards to your point on boss motivation...i kinda just kept going :p

I hope i didnt come across as too stand-offish (yes its a word! :p) Some of the guys passion for the game can sometimes translate as being an ass when it comes to the forums :p

As said above, I find it particularly peculiar that you require such in depth lore to sufficiently roleplay. I RP as a Space Rockstar from mars, and that isn't written anywhere. Also your critique of the human situation is off in my opinion, they're scattered to the stars, their planet completely consumed by a tentacle monster that managed to defeat the whole of Earth, why would you bother to try and fight that when you have FTL and millions of livable planets? In my eyes the human backstory as it were is about a race trying to find a new home.

In relation to your point about bosses, Macish, I can certainly understand the usefulness of various creative applications of imagination filling the gaps as to why your Human would do X, Y and Z. I wouldn't want any lore to pigeon-hole you into anything or lock you into one particular mode of play. But that's part of the inspired nature of Floran lore: There's nothing in the lore stopping your Floran from thinking outside the box or playing against type. It's open-ended. But there's no need to do mental gymnastics that stand a chance to break your suspension of disbelief every time you're doing an activity that seems so far removed from your goal as to be a mite ridiculous.

Believe me, I build stuff regardless. My SimCity 4 mod folder is a gig and a half large, and my Skyrim mod manager chugs under the weight of various fixes and additions. But where I found it weird in Skyrim, for instance, to take a break from the extraordinarily urgent need to protect us from the end of the world, and also a civil war, to chop lumber for my house in the country, I knew that I could pick up sticks and kill Alduin, and then do what I want. Here, however, you're not going to triumphantly take back Earth or discover the secrets of Kluex. You're going to chop your lumber and build your house practically in defiance of greater goals. You're more or less forced to play against type. So a little hint that your ministrations are actually in service to your greater goal would be appreciated.

Except all the colonies are on lockdown and stand-by. Hence.

Besides, if the entire backstory was just a reason to get you to go explore other places, then it's gratuitously overwrought: That's what humanity was doing before the space tentacles came. If anything, the space tentacles halted expansion. All it really serves is to say "you can't go home again," which is kinda funny in the sense that all of the other races have a home to go to and nothing's really stopping them (except that their homes, similarly, don't exist in this procedurally-generated galaxy), but it's just not a concern of theirs to do so.

I think once quests are in place to explain the actions of your character you'll be much more satisfied. As things stand now, i think the only saving grace of the Floran (and you know how much i love the floran :p) is that their goals are relatively minor compared to the goals of the other races. The Other races want grand, sweeping things. They want to save the world, discover their origins, overthrow a corrupt theocracy...and the florans want to stab things.

So where the beta stands, we dont know why we're mindlessy gathering resources or fighting giant jellyfish, and what that might do to help us achieve our ultimate goals...but we do know the florans want to stab...and stab they do!

Hahaha, okay you blew it. You're obviously trolling now.

"hurrr, humans have no home. they have no reason to eek out an existence anywhere, though."

@Nalano So, if I'm understanding correctly, your issue is that you want the game to provide you with some epic hero quest..? Aside from the fact Earth isn't in the game (I imagine a mod for Sol may appear one day.) what's stopping your character from taking personal vengeance against every tentacle planet they can? I'm not getting what your point is, you seem to be complaining that there isn't enough story, but I mean come on, it's a sandbox game. Compared to most sandbox games this has an incredible amount of lore. Minecraft doesn't really have any, Terraria doesn't, and then you get a few such as Darkout (I think is the name) where the lore is "You crash landed on a planet". The only other significant survival/sandbox I can think of with much lore is Don't Starve.

As with needing reason to do things.. Because that is what your character wants? You don't need a backstory for your entire race to justify your character being an asshole, and if it doesn't fit with their personal backstory you've crafted then don't do it. You aren't required to raid dungeons or slaughter wildlife that isn't attacking you. As for mining asteroids, fuel. You have a spaceship, if you want to use it you need fuel, do you really need a backstory for that? Same with bases, though currently those are relatively useless anyway.

If you thought that was snippy I suggest you just ignore my posts. I honestly wasn't being snippy (at least intentionally) at all. You can't honestly say that "my way of playing is THE way of playing" is not self-absorbed.

Before I go on, let me clear up one thing; Skyrim is /not/ a sandbox game. It is an open ended RPG, yes, but /not/ a sandbox. It is much more highly structured than a sandbox.
The goal of a sandbox game is whatever I make it out to be. Are there things the developer perhaps wants me to do, or do a certain way? Sure, and they'll program accordingly. But that doesn't make it the goal of the game in the slightest. Starbound is billed as a sandbox space exploration game, not a shoot em up hack and slash.

As you said, fighting bosses is how you progress in the game. It easily makes lore sense as to why Glitch and Humans would want to do this. As a human, you're not going to go beat a planet/race destroying Cthulu beast with tier 1 iron weapons, are you?
As a Glitch, do you think walking around in the first auto accessible galaxy is going to yield The Creator? If anything, said Creator would be in hard to reach far off Galaxies. Otherwise someone would have found him/her/it before, no?

You just have to apply thought to see how it would work outside of "my entire goal is kill".

No, the exact opposite. The lore has already set up an epic hero quest, but it's not that type of game. It's a bunch of lore for a different genre. That's the point.

You eke out an existence in the first ten minutes of the game. I know this concept is difficult for you, which you clearly hide by projecting your issues onto me, but there's quite a lot more in this game available to you than just eking out an existence.

Well that makes much more sense, in which case I kind of agree there.

replace "ekeing out an existence" with "killing everything in sight".
And that's why all the lore fits just as well as "floran kills" lore.

This is all kinds of hitting the nail on the head.

The Apex rebel already got owned knows damn well he/she needs to tool up and train like mad to win overthrow Big Ape and the Miniknog. They are trying to overthrow an entire government after all. That means mining for better materials, building a safe house/base of operations and fighting everything and anything for the combat training.

Anyone that says the lore doesn't fit gave up after 5sec of thinking.

Since when do Humans not aspire to crazy goals? Since when did Humans need a reason to kill all of everything while raping the land? Since when did Humans need a valid reason to kill a big monster?

Bragging rights/Self entitlement/Believing it's our destiny/Because we are in a bad mood/Because we are dicks and like hurting things/Because it was there. Seems like human lore fits better the Floran.

It's Orcs not Orks. Orcs depending on the lore you use are all very different so which Orcs do you speak of? Because I don't know any Orcs from any lore that are anything like the Floran.
