A few modders are now flexing their muscles on the nightly builds, since they are able to do so much more than they normally would prior.

I'm sorry, but what message forum is NOT in some manner or other "biased"?

I'm talking about the actual meaning of the word, not "opinion I disagree with", as seems to be the popular (wrong) use of the word.

I would wait and see what the next update has in it before deciding to buy, it's been a long time since the last stable with only nightlies in between, so best hang onto your money until you know what will make it into stable.

But keep in mind that when you wanna buy it when it's release it could have a higher price than now (actual it counts as a preorder if i understood that right)

Better to pay a higher price for a full game than buy in when it's cheap and be left in limbo IMO

Terraria hardly had a setting. It was just a 2d game with snow, desert and grass. I don't consider that much of a theme since it's a tad broad. If you liked the gameplay in Terraria you'll probably like Starbound. They're essentially the same family of games. You dig, build, craft in a sidescrolling manner. It's not terrible innovative yet considering the game is so underdeveloped. As far as games in the genre go, Starbound and Terraria are your best bets. There isn't a lot of quality to choose from outside those two games. Be prepared for long waits between updates, however, as nightly unstable builds are all you're going to get until 1.0.

Personally, I found Terraria to be mind-numbingly boring after having gotten end-game gear. There just wasn't anything to do. Building was incredibly bland and linear and that was really all there was outside of combat and mining. With no leveling of any kind, no craft skills, no town management (npc rooms doesn't count) and no other worlds to visit other than the generic grass/snow/desert overlay, it died very quickly for me. Starbound isn't much better, to be frank, but this is because it's still missing a lot of key features. Games like these need something to manage... town properties with protected land, villages where you're responsible for NPC happiness... Ways to generate periodic income through some form of micromanagement involving towns. Once you realize all you're doing is digging up ore to make gear to kill a boss to do it again X times, the enjoyment is nullified. Something needs to exist to break up the monotony.

The steam forums and these forums are both poor places for updates. Lets not compare them.

The best place to look is straight from the horse's mouth. No registration or clicking agreements. Just a blog listing updates and updates and updates and updates and updates.

Take a look at the pace of development here.

Chucklefish have an amazing workrate, however every time they take 3 steps forward they realise something else needs to change. Again. And take 2 steps back. So it seems like they're just taking a step every now and then if you're not watching them running back and forth at great speed. But hell, read the blog for a while and make your mind up yourself. You don't need me, another forum poster to tell you what to think you can work it out yourself.

Honestly, wait until its been officially released. if you get it now, you are wasting your time. The game is a broken unreleased mess, and everyone here says "USE THE NIGHTLY BUILDS" which are broken and in development.

odds are this will release sometime next summer with their development speed, wait until Fall and read the reviews. I dont think this game has anywhere near half of the gameplay interest that Terraria has. That could change after the actual game releases, but as it is now, Terreria was more fun.

Well actually its 1 million+ copies sold. Not 1 million dollars
So it is actually $15 million - 30% [distribution] = So around $9 million + they made.

It would probably be better to ask somewhere that isn't biased if you're serious about getting an opinion on if the game's worth it or not.

I got my monies worth, it's pretty fun for a while. I regret buying the game though.

It's 1.5 million copies now btw. Don't forget to take off 20% for the loving UK governments skim.

I think the only place where Starbound is "Dead" is Online.
Not many people play online, too bad :(

The multiplayer's a bit buggy. I think a couple daily updates described, or hinted, that they were working on it.

I'm still excited about the notion of having a proper server setup with protection, groups that people can be assigned with specific permissions and land protection. Couple that with the dungeon master system... Neverending joy.

I'm not comfortable using thirdparty wrappers, either. Devs other than the ones making the game can't be relied on forever. Look what happened with Bukkit. We need proper stuff in place if we want to see Starbound work well online. If someone was into this game, read it has online multiplayer and got totally psyched to play it with other people then they go buy it for that reason, they'd be super let down when they actually see what online is like. I know I was, I know my entire community was. Here's hoping 1.0 solves those problems.

Technically landing protection is already there technically - with the new planet unlocking system. Though if they change the system it is a different story.
Though the way they set it up - it would mean the clients would need to install a mod to do it - but then again with the mod installed it would allow better control of those settings.

That's not what I'm thinking. I would love to see some actual mechanic in place where you could buy planets and claim land per X amount of upkeep on a recurring daily tick. I say it ALL the time on these forums but I'm going to keep saying it so it stays consistent. We need Towny for Starbound or a towny-esque mechanic by the actual game devs. Some form of property management to break up the monotony of mining and grinding, something to go home to.
