Looking into getting this game but...

The stable version is extremely fun, at least as far as building things is concerned, I have easily gotten my moneys worth, just in the hours spent doing that. Progression is a bit meh, but, yeah, early access. And the nightly updates. Its "broken!", but, oh my goodness, it is exceptionally exciting for things to come.

Edit: 289 hours to date. Almost all of that is in stable, and, yes, I grew bored, and took a hiatus, to wait for a new update.

You're not going to find anything here that Terraria hasn't already done better.

Honestly, Ive never played Terraria, but at a minimum, Starbound has scifi, and billions of worlds to explore. The ability to share coordinates, and find a prebuilt world, or a small multiplayer universe, with internal coop, and the opportunity to have absolutely epic world interactions is incredible. Frankly, the one thing I can say for this game that rings the most true for me, is that this game has massive potential. And, with a few of the directions they have taken with this game that doesnt quite do it for me, the game is relatively easy to mod it back in/put it in. Terraria seems to lack deep lore, and the survival system to draw me in.

well factually speaking the game is not abandoned, some people may have an opinion that it's abandoned and see their opinion as a fact, but factually speaking the game is not abandoned.

If they have that opinion, it's an easily corrected one by posting a link to the health check blog post.

People have positive and negative opinions on a lot of things in the game, but those game is abandoned posts / rumours are the easiest to deal with.

If you didn't like Terraria, my gut suggestion would be to wait for the official release of Starbound.
Currently, the content revolves around terrestrial exploration more than space exploration (including theme), though that is changing.

While Starbound is DEFINITELY NOT ABANDONED, production occurs very slowly and methodically now; largely because the dev team has missed virtually every hard deadline they've established to date.
(that is simple fact, not bias. Derive from that what you will.)
Progress is being made on the game, but do not expect big patch updates for the "stable" build, and definitely don't expect the official release any time soon.
Chucklefish has caught a lot of flak for missing their deadlines, so (I hope) they're being more discerning about when they make the announcement and jump to Full Release.

(rest assured, it's coming; they have plenty of talent and plenty of money)

As for the more immediate progress: There are what are called "Nightly Builds", which incorporate the latest assets/content produced by the dev-team; but beware, Nightlies are very buggy imbalanced and prone to game-breaking bugs/glitches that require admin-command workarounds.
It's a rapid-fire testbed for game content more than anything; not a surrogate build for stable gameplay.
If you want to give it a try, a mote of patience is required.

This doesn't mean Starbound can't be fun, but don't expect instant gratification.

The way I see the situation is that Chucklefish:chucklefish: was trying to please everybody with the speed of the updates. At one point they were making large updates every once in a while, but people said they were taking too long. So, they made small updates quickly. People said those were too frequent. So, Chucklefish decided to make enormous updates very slowly in one branch and daily in the other. All in all, development is going fine, and even the branch that hasn't been updated in a long time is fun.

People say the game is abandoned, yet progress is being posted almost every single day, and the nightly updates make it updated almost every single day. People are just impatient and/or ignorant about it.

Starbound is a "sand-box" game. The missions are a great way to add life to progression to higher levels but the main goal is to build what ever your imagination can cook up. You can still have fun finding new ways to construct buildings or kill your enemies.

Bought it, got my money's worth. Delved into mods, doubled my moneys worth. Stopped playing for a while. Started on nightly build plays, looks promising. Got bored of nightly builds, went back to old ones with mods.

While unfinished, played a couple hundred hours of it. Worth the price of admission, and clearly not abandoned. Slow, yes, but if you like Terraria, it's worth playing as is for a while. When equating value to the purchase of a game, I like to equate the cost of the game to the hours I enjoy it. I'm at about $0.15 USD per hour of entertainment; a bargain compared to some games. I mean, granted, I probably got Minecraft down to pennies on the hour, but still; I have high hopes, but if the game died tomorrow, I wouldn't regret the purchase...

Reviews on steam which say it's abandoned are not true at all. They only writing this *beep*censored*beep* because they expect the nightly updates in the stable one. They didn't inform theirselfes right that's why there are wrong rumors. And even if they know about the nightlies they say that starbound isn't developped anymore (They also were crying because the information are first posted on the official page instead of steam).

My advice is to check out the official forums instead of the steam-forums (i tried to discuss with them a couple of weeks ago but it was useless).

Sweeping generalization, However people are entitled to their opinions on both platforms. If the 800,000 people who bought the game and haven't registered here have default access to steam forums, then it's not really accurate to describe this place as the venue for "informed" people, and steam as a venue for "un-informed".

That's just trying to push a schism, where there isn't one. I am on both btw..

Anybody who says the game is abandoned is a bunch of jokahs

Development (on the stable branch) may be very very slow, but the game certainly isn't abandonded

Maybe this is true but i'm concerned that a community where are wrong rumors spread are the better choice :/ (this doesn't contain all of them but in the last time i saw a lot of those "this game is abandoned"-reviews on steam)
