Looking into getting this game but...

I tried Terraria and I didn't like it, not a fan of the theme/setting. I do like space theme settings, starbound looks like it would capture my interests. I've read on steam from the reviews that this game has been abandoned, what's the current state of this game with regards to development?

The game is most certainly not abandoned. Those words come from impatient folk who have made it their goal to complain about this game.

Progress is being made almost every night, it's just there are just a bunch of uninformed twats on Steam who fail to notice the nightly beta builds, don't read the almost-daily blog posts, and/or just like complaining for the sake of complaining.

For the sake of Devil's advocate, the game hasn't been abandoned but the development is incredibly slow. If you don't want to wait several months to a year for the next update, I suggest finding something to tide you over.
[edit] the development is slow if you don't want to play the unstable nightlies. If you're cool with instability, then development is more or less daily.

Does the Devil really NEED advocates? I've always found that phrase highly suspect.

Any rate, it's not that the development is slow. As noted, they're chugging away at a ton of content while refining and improving a lot of the stuff that already exists.

It's that they've stopped spending "final"-game-delaying time putting out the huge "stable" updates at such a regular pace as they had been, since making sure the game is both stable and balanced is typically a back-end-of-development deal, and they're still working on stuff that causes massive glitches and flat-out game-breaking (as in not-working-anymore-at-all, might-have-to-re-install) issues.

You can buy in and play a pretty-damn-stable version of the game, but bear in mind it's outdated and the "final" will be... considerably different (and much bigger) in many ways. I did, and I'd say I got more than 15 bones' worth of fun from it (still do, but I like building stuff).

You can get a taste of the all the new stuff by opting into the nightly updates, but those are NOT stable. They be broke. They'll require a lot more personal involvement on your part, managing crap outside the game, plugging in admin codes to make key things work, etc. If you think you have the patience to do a buttload of non-gameplaying maintenance, well, go for it. (Not me tho.)

So no, the game is far from abandoned. Do NOT worry on that score. But whether you buy in NOW does sorta hinge on what you're looking to do. If you're mainly into building stuff, then by all means (but keep in mind what you build does have a high probability of going bye-bye come the next big stable update, since they're working on some major universe revisions). If you're looking for a combat/story-progression experience? Nnnnno. Not yet. Next build.

It's not abandoned. They just haven't updated the version most people play for months, and afaik this has caused some modders to stop developing their mods as well.

Yeah, if they're doing some fundamental coding changes, prolly best not to spend a lot of time of work on a mod you're likely to have to completely re-do later.

Not abandoned, just hasn't had a big update for a while, one coming *soon* though

y soon.... soon is for them a time between 4 months and a year xD

y.. sure... has nothing to do with the fact they promised a lot of updates and now we wait 10 months for one... right? ;) and nobody knows how long we still have to wait... almost 1 year till new update... new record xD

@topic : if you want a Terraria game in space then try Edge of Space :) every month a update and its rly fun to play :D

The steam community is not the place for truth. Better to come here and monitor the game's progress.

Sorry, but that's not "truth" either. Opinions are opinions, not truth or falsehoods.

If you mean the game-is-abandoned trope, that's as equally tiresome when it's posted here as when it's posted on Steam.

Both places (and reddit too, coz never forget about reddit!) want the same. This game to be awesome. It's not there yet, but I'm sanguine about the future.

Fair enough, but the steam community is honestly at the bottom of my list of truthful people.
At least here I can tell what's going on without some guy telling me that the game is dead.

I cannot effectively reply to this comment without running the risk of being awarded a comedy racoon, but you are wrong.

There are many more dishonest places on the interweb, but naming (and shaming) them would be a massive derail. Filter your Steam reviews by most recent to see the "truth". Not everyone on Steam forums are involved in a conspiracy to exaggerate the accounts of Starbound's death.

No no. Not everyone, I suppose.

I'm speaking through experience, bad ones. I can't say something and expect everyone to see where I'm coming from.

I'll happily admit that whatever I say about this has a high chance of being wrong, due to my faith in the steam community being warped by unpleasant confrontations I had in the past.

Excuse me for my lapse of judgement. Well done for setting me straight.

Back on track. No one needs to worry about the game being abandoned. I don't.

I have time to wait for a game I know I'm going to enjoy for hours.

Just wait for it to be released. Also go watch some gameplay videos to see if it's your style of game.
