Will there at any point be local co-op support for this game?

If it's not in the game at this time it most likely will be down the road after launch or close to it, depending on their goals.

If you mean local as in splitscreen, I doubt it. If you mean LAN, then that's a yes.

Either one would be nice, but either split screen or something similar to guacamelee would be nice.

Dont think there it will have splitscreen.

I honestly cannot see split screen support ever being a thing for this game, except maybe for a console version of the game. But thats quite a ways away

Don't count on split screen being in game but local co op will be possible if you set up a small server with a whitelist

Can Hamachi do the trick, then?

Setting up a server and connecting with local IP's will be LAN, and as long as you don't open any ports a white list is not needed.

For Local Co-op to work you'd need controller compatibility and in the eyes of the almighty, if you use a controller then you hate fun.

I'd like to see it implemented... however, I think it's going to be another case of Terraria, Local Co-op and Controller support on the consoles... but leave that out on PC.
There's a lot of games like that unfortunately, I guess in the end, PC players don't have friends.

I seem to recall that one of the devs (Omni maybe) said that the engine simply will not work for split-screen. It would require a significant amount of re-coding to get it to work, if at all.

Split screen would be hard to play on PC because you would need 2 mice and the keyboard would be cramped. Starbound and Terraria are both games that players want to use their full screen for so splitting it would be hard to play, especially in combat.

I imagine if they added controller compatibility then one person could use a mouse + keyboard while the other uses a gamepad, I can still see that being awkward in desk setups but a lot of people use their PC's as a home entertainment device, usually situated in the living room, with a very large TV/Monitor. In the latter case those problems would be gone.

a lot of people is still a minority, I'd rather the Devs focus on adding more cool gameplay features than rewriting a large portion of code to cater for split screen support for PCs

They've already said they've built the game around adding new stuff, so that it would be super easy to add more base content. Considering they've also announced they'll support the game for a whole year after release... I'm sure they'll have more than enough content in the game sooner or later that they'll be able to spend some time reworking the game. Also considering they'll have to do that for the PS4 anyway.... might aswell add local co-op while they're porting it.

There's also the fact people will be able to freely add any content they want via mods...

Plus... local co-op and controller support are "cool gameplay features"
