"Living" Weapons

    Hello all Mr Nith here, I have been wondering about the possibility about "Living" weapons, Rare alien beings that merge with the one who finds them, Guns have rechargable ammo and become stonger via feeding. (Would simply be an equipable weapon for ease of use)

    Imagine a symbiotic organism that is attached to your arm It does not require ammo as it generates it by itself (however extended use will tire it out and force it to make more) It can be made stronger by feeding it rare items (trying to determine what it should be, Maybe rare DNA types)., It comes in many species and each one has differant properties for example:

    The "Spiker", A machine gun like weapon that kinda mimics the Hydralisk from Starcraft as in it shoots out bone spikes at high velocity.

    Another could be the "Dissolver" It is a shotgun like weapon that shoots out its own acid (range is very limited) and can weaken your enemys armor.

    "Incinerator" Much like the Dissolver but it shoots out a blue flame continuously (it will run out of ammo much quicker then the others) and will make enemys suffer additional damage over time.

    This could even be made for melee weapons. I was thinking of a alien barb that shoots out of your hand (Similar to the harpoon gun from Terraria).

    These are just a few ideas, I would like to hear what others think :).

    P.S if the Starbound devs like this idea, then they have my full permission to do whatever it is they wish with it, I dont even need to be asked by them to use it or even mentioned :).

    This is an amazing thought, however I think if you have a living weapon for long enough, it starts becoming you, and the weapon starts to look more and more like your arm until it is your arm and it just looks like your arm o.o

    This would be a great idea for an alien race, but it seems a little... limiting. If your hand is enveloped by a symbiotic organism, wouldn't that keep you from using that hand? The obvious solution would be to make it merely an extension of your hand, or of your arm, but then the question remains: How do you differentiate it from other weapons if it's not held, but rather a part of you? Would it fire when you were unarmed? What if the devs had something in mind for unarmed functionality that conflicted? Ideally, we'd hope that unarmed clicking was interaction/melee, and perhaps this would act as a curable disease with benefits to not curing it, a disability that enabled something else. After all, it is just one hand... You have two.

    It could be a symbiote that can morph onto your hand or have it shift off it until you select it again, So it could be toggleable. Im not looking to break game mechanics, just giving idea for new weaponry.

    When I read the title I knew it would be an awesome idea, and it was.
    Man to have this would be so awesome, but I get a feeling that it could be overused too much, and to gather around rare items just to shoot your gun for a while makes it not worth it... Oh well, I don't really know how it could work but if it could, it would be awesome.

    I havent played megaman since the SNES was the newest console out :p. But since you mention it the concept does kinda seem like it.

    And I think you should only be able to have 1 alien symbiote on your body at a time. Any others you find will have to be kept in the Lab to prevent you from overusing them.
    Not looking to break the game Woodle, Your hand could still be used, You could toggle the alien from being "Active" or not so you can still use your hand for other weapons/items.

    I like Megaman and this is why i intantly though about it :giggle: I think your idea is good because it adds even more flexebility to the player. As in Megaman it could have a power drain feature that has to be filled again but can give you a small advantage in battles or atleast enables you to pursue different startegies.

    This is a great idea! I would love to see living weapons in the game, especially melee weapons, a thorn blade that has a huge reach and a hunger for alien souls. *Wants*

    Its another reason i would like it to be where you can only have 1 "Symbiote" on you at a time, you can collect all of them but they have to stay in the lab. So you would have to switch them out depending on what you plan to use them for.

    I recently had another idea for a melee weapon, "The Mauler" will turn your hand into a big tooth filled mouth range is the shortest of all melee weapons, With every melee attack it will either be able to hold the enemy and do continuous biting dmg (but you cannot move till you let go or it dies). or will heal you a fraction of the dmg you do.

    Thank you for mentioning that, However Instead of it simply being something you pick up, I think it should be part of your body. Kinda like a shapeshifter for your arm.

    But then again a hornet gun would be good, Shoot out a bunch of low hp npcs to help you kill things.

    Symbiotic weapons sound cool. I assume they can level up? Raising them to be stronger with certain foods works just as well, though.

    They'd probably do overall less damage than other weapons, but I can assume there would be added perks, like leveling up, poisons, the whole idea of not needing ammo frequently. Perhaps ranged weapons all have a natural melee auxiliary attack? The spike shooter maces them, etc?

    Yes eqlles, as stated in the first post I believe they should be able to lvl up, im thinking upgrade by "Feeding" them rare DNA strands or maybe rare forms of energy found on planets or within meteorites.

    I like the idea of the ranged being able to be switched into melee, and yeah as dmg wise their starting "Form" is quite weak and have a slow ammo recharge rate but as we lvl them up it should increase in damage, ammo recharge rate, and prehaps rate of fire. (but should not be as strong as strongest weapons in game).

    and interesting add-on idea to the living weapons: what if when t runs out of ammo, or as an alternate ammo you sacrifice some of your own life, i imagine that if it's symbiotic you could feed it some of your own life force in return for it to protect you (shoot more)

    Decided to type these all up, nice-like. Original Idea belongs to Nithilus(OP):

    "Spiker" Alien Parasite(Symbiotic Weapon-1H): This mysterious creature is a plant-like organism from an unknown world. It requires body heat in order to function, and often latches on to other creatures, using their warm-blooded nature to carry out its life-sustaining chemical processes. As a benefit, the creature emits spikes from its skin, repelling predators by expelling the small spines at them. This particular one has latched onto your hand and may be used as a weapon. It constantly regenerates ammunition, but cannot be used effectively for long periods of time without breaks.

    EDIT: Melee form is a shield that shoots out a hail of spines on a successful block.

    "Dissolver" Alien Parasite(Symbiotic Weapon-1H): Another strange creature whose origin is as of yet unknown, this particular species feeds mostly on larger creatures with tough skin. This diet is enabled by the immensely corrosive acid it produces within its body. By mounting the creature on a acid-resistant glove, you've created a makeshift acid launcher. It produces ammunition automatically, but it needs to be fed periodically or it will not produce an appreciable amount per second.

    EDIT: Melee form is a punch attack that reduces armor and deals damage over time.

    "Incinerator" Alien Parasite(Symbiotic Weapon-1H): This particular creature's homeworld is actually known, as it originated from the infamous plant of Keltar-26. The attempted culling of this creature resulted in the near-extinction of the dominant species of the planet. Since that time, their warriors have learned to co-exist with these creatures, using their ability to produce a chemical flame seemingly from nowhere to dominate and instill fear in their enemies. Deals immense burst damage, but runs out of ammunition quite fast.

    EDIT: First form is already melee enough. Thinking that the other form should be more ranged, with an exploding blue fireball that has to be charged up or something.
