It's better to have all your crafting stations on your ship with a Merchant tenant however for crew-recruiting it's best to make a colony on a planet so you can get quests often

I like having all the stations in my ship but having a civilization is fine.

Build it yourself. Village Guards have a troublesome AI very often. You could end up dead while building your own house.

The first 2 are kind of subjective to playstyle and the individual interests... I am a building, sooo... I just build.

As to the last one, I use flags as markers to places I want to return to eventually. Like certain villages, merchants that sell specific furniture or items, places I want to eventually make a colony to expand my empire to, places I want to strip clean the blocks & items, and temp ones so that I can beam down with my crew if in tight situation or at a place I am going to loot that has enemies. Then also place flag on planets I just want the resources of, as crafting things for building... does need materials.

This is just my playstyle, and how I go about the game. The ship is good for storage as well a planet base depending on how much a hoarder one is. For a minimalist, the ship will do; with or without upgrades.

Depends how immersed you get in the game. Having your ship as a central hub for all your necessities is nice. But when you find yourself role-playing while you play the game, living in a village has much more appeal.

I use my spaceship. That way, I don't have to be tied to a certain planet i must go back and forth to. It's fun to be a space nomad!

I would usually start the game living on my home garden planet until I have a ship with two rooms. Then, i use the front room for storage, and the back for crafting!

Then i usually hunt for food until I have one with 3 rooms. I use the new big room for two layer farming complex, so I never need to live on a planet again.

My main base is my ship. Very important because I occasionally hop into a friend's game, so I still have all my stuff.
But I do build planet bases

I have the best of both worlds, i made a HUB for all my characters and have the 3 main crafting stations in every ship.

I started living on the first planet I landed on and built a big farm there. After my ship got big enough I moved into it. I did place a teleporter at the farm though. I also placed a teleporter on an inconceivable difficulty planet at a big rent house I built (since you get better tenant loot on higher tiered planets), and I hop over there to collect rent every 20-30 minutes. I placed a flag at a merchant I found that sold blue stim packs. I've been looking for a merchant that sells green stim packs, but at this point I doubt they exist.

Of course I build myself a big colony with a farm, without a farm I will starve myself, plus it's more immersive.

My floran favorite food is Meat n' Marrow, so he built a big Boneboo farm, and from time to time he hunts for Meat Chunks in flesh biomes.

i started the game being shipbased. if you dont find the upgrades quickly it becomes hard to make everything fit at the start. specially when you need cotton for the tier 2 armor.

then i made a planetbased gameplay, and apart of the whole logistics of gatherin materials and flattening the landing site. it becomes quite challenging in terms of expanding space. specially if you get into the farming business (space for crops, animal pens, etcetera).

at its height i was still living on a 2 story box, but had a chicken/robot chicken pen, 2 crop fields and a mooshi pen, i was also planning into building a fluffalo enclosure.

but then i got bored with having to come back home just for storing my stuff.

im starting again with a ship based glitch and as for now i have just gotten into tier 2 armor and finding crewmates for the first ship upgrade.

having a planet base can be usefull, specially related to farming and building. but it limits you in how much you can travel, unless you get to build a teleporter there.

being ship based means you always have your storage and crafting stations at hand. but you have to put effort into expanding the ship for the extra space.

each type of gameplay has its pros and cons basically.

The ship is a fixed space that you can not configure to your liking.

Planetside is where all the cool kids hang.

Throw in a teleporter and the ship becomes practically redundant.

I only use my ship as a place to keep my Bug-Out Box™ (because of all the wondrous horrors in this sprawling universe, my most lethal enemy is the fundamental force of gravity), to house my useless crew members (i.e. ALL of them) and to get to new planets that don't have teleporters yet.
