So far, one the, if not THE, most impressive things I've seen about Starbound so far has been the atmosphere. It almost makes me wish the blocks were less... blocky, only to make the game look even better. Or things to make things look less square.

I kind of like how the snow "droops" off the side of blocks. The blocks look more like rounded chunks, making it look like the world wasn't supposed to be made blocky, you just built it that way.

does that mean I'm from the future?

So the snow droops off the side of blocks, eh? Even cooler.

Scaling means mobs of different sizes so I'm all for it.

The more recent screenshots make me realise how good Starbound looks. I'm looking forward to the geographical variety of the different planets.

  6. Here is my guess: I don't think so as it would change the style drastically. At this point in the game the esthetics are likely to be pretty much set. Also the avatar tool was released and even updated. (but they did say it is subject to change...) IMO, I think the idea was to add more variety to the game with tiny monsters which might not have been possible with the current size of the pixels. Who knows, maybe they're babies... That could explain the adorableness.

I must say I like the charm of the pixeliness of the stuff we have seen so far. I would prefer it if the pixels didn't get too fine because the game might lose some of it's graphical character. Having said that, I did not notice that those...space bunnies ... were pixelated more finely until I read more of the thread. It's all about balance right?

Background looks amazing, like all the others I've seen!

Not sure how I feel about those space bunnies (the bushy tail reminds me of bugs bunny)... I will sit here and plot genocide. :halo:

Doesnt look good in the picture? really? I think this looks great. Hope they keep pursuing this as a 'one size fits alll' monster approach would really cut down on the diversity and interest.

    Wait a sec... scaling?

Hold up, maybe with this, we could actually make our characters bigger or smaller? Like the size of houses, even?

I love this idea already for various reasons.

Well with sand, theres soft sand (falls) and hard sand, and the "purple" ore, which shares the same pattern as the ice, which may be like Hard Snow, and the blue-er kind could be gravity affected possibly.

Having two or three times as many pixels probably wouldn't adversely affect the aesthetics. It's not like I just proposed they should go to DirectX 11 3D with a billion polygons. But, having more pixels would allow slightly finer detail. Done right it could certainly add more to the aesthetic than take away. Increasing the resolution and pixel density doesn't mean it wouldn't still retain the same pixel-tastic style we'll all come to know and love.

Imagine giving a little more life to the "leaves" on a Floran or the "gills" on a Aquatic or the buttons on an Apex's fancy uniform. Little things is what I had in mind.

You see when baby monster are born they have small pixels, as they mature they grow bigger and so do their pixels. It's just a nature thing. :V

On a more serious note, I really would like to see different sized mobs and scaling makes it easier for the devs rather then having to draw every single monster part again on a smaller or larger scale. Cause you can't tell me that you wouldn't think it's adorable to have a normal sized monster with a few smaller sized ones around it to make it look like a family. Plus it gives the game a bit more of a ecosystem feel rather then every single mob being the same size.

Also. THAT BIOME. <3 Freaking love snow biomes in games, and there are two planets I am going to turn into my homeworld, either a snow planet, or a ocean planet. END OF STORY. It will be done, and it will be awesome.

Now I wait to see if they're going to add in small details like bugs and little things just for appearances. One thing I can say that kinda irked me in Terraria and Minecraft, was that the game worlds seemed really... Empty. I mean, you add the butterfly mod in Minecraft and it just makes it feel so much better because there's more to it then just blank land everywhere with the occasional animal. Though I can see that being the case on ice planets.

I wonder how naming will work for procedurally generated creatures? Maybe they'll have a prefix+base+suffix system based off body parts, or something. It just boggles my mind a little when I try to imagine how many creatures there can be, and, therefore, how many names and catalog entries there could be.

Just to say something here, I think that if they keep the scaling the way it is the player skin should be scaled. It just looks downright nasty right now.
