List of Announced Game Information (Retired due to release)

  1. Well we haven't really seen much gameplay at all. Who knows, the space station might actually be- you know- infested with creatures, and the space station might be your first "planet", where you salvage broken down machinery, while fending off creatures that might be living there, in order to create basic scrap armor. That way, rather than making a space station, you fight your way for one.

Though not every game like this really needs the 'survival' factor. Sure it would be nice to have it, but considering the vast amounts of content this has, it seems to be more of an 'exploration' game. And, of course, that usually comes with usual 'oh snap we might have landed in the wrong planet' times, where, I believe, that's where the 'survival' factor comes in.

It has been stated it will be abandoned and you have to repair it

"Throughout your travels you’ll find ways to upgrade and repair it, restoring it to its former glory. You’ll need to find a crew, conduct research, catch rare creatures, and unlock its multitude of facilities."

There was somewhere else though I was looking for that Tiy was quoted wording it differently but yeah the one on the about page is basically the same.

    Found it:

'Starbound's story-driven, planet-hopping adventure kicks off as you narrowly avoid being destroyed alongside your doomed homeworld. Set adrift in the cosmos, you crash into an abandoned space station, which soon becomes a central hub for exploring the galaxy. "Players will be tasked with repairing this station and bringing it back to life whilst investigating those behind the homeworld attack," Brice explains.'
Its from the gamespy article. You'll notice it says abandoned and repairing to bring back to life (E.i. the station is dead)

And if you're wanting survival mining game I might suggest minecraft on hardmode or whatever for you.

Thank you for spending time gathering the information. I feel somewhat relieved that there will be at least some survivalistic aspect for the gameplay left. Now, there's me hoping that station will really be badly trashed, so not only facilities but also different compartments will require quite some planning and work to be accessible, yet alone useful and the efficiency of what will be repaired will still be improvable so it'll be game-long optional goal for the players.

Been there, done that. In case of Starbound, I do not expect just an alternative to the current version of Minecraft or even Terraria clone. With features hinted at by the devteam, I hope for something bigger. It's just that for the great space exploration and sci-fi world-simulator that Starbound seems to be aspiring to, I (and not only me, it seems) also would like to encounter regular, mundane survival elements plus variety of goals to achieve. In Terraria, for example, while the gameplay was great for quite some time, at some point it (a bit before Wall of Flesh I believe) got brought down to 'get even more powerful armor/sword, kill even more powerful monster'. The game was and still is enjoyable, but with the potential this one shows, I want more.

Np. Yeah I'm happy they won't just put you in the game with high level stuff, it would probably ruin the game for me. However I don't think they will have a food bar (they said this was out)
or water, maybe they'll release a hardmode after the game is out, provided enough people want it. I kinda like Minecraft's release model where the got the primary part of the game and kept adding to it, even though I don't love minecraft itself.

I had an idea for a quest that would somewhat add to the survival feel if you don't mind giving me your opinion. http://community.playstarbound.com/index.php?threads/shipwreck.6013/

I had the same feeling you did with Terraria. Its still probably in my top 5 games though.

I think it just means that there won't be fog of war like in RTS games where you can see a spot at all till you've been there before.

I am kinda wondering if that fog of war thing means no fog at all, I would love a foggy planet, where visibility is down everywhere.

I am very well aware that as currently things stand there is little of a plan for survivalistic gameplay outside of few lil events and fluff and thus also things like hunger aren't really expected to be implemented for core gameplay yet since nothing is set in stone and there seems to be a number of players hoping for such, I still am in support for ideas pertraining to such kind of thing, even in the form of alternative, bonus option.

It's mechanics, multitude of possible goals and core features that ultimately serve the enjoyment of sandbox game. Without different things to aspire to and overcome, the experience will be bland. And while I put some faith in the devteam, I'd rather do what I can to help alleviate my worries. It's just one of the things that is keeping me preoccupied in quite many sandbox games, a challenge I am gladly facing - survival, not just against monsters - but also as in striving and succeeding in becoming self-sustainable, possessing supplies allowing me to take care of many problems and temporary restrictions found in the beginning of my gameplay. That brings me and many others quite some feeling of accomplishment. It's when I have a stable home/base, a safe haven - one made from nothing but basic elements by myself through my hard work as far better than just given to me - the game risks being reduced to traversing new lands for new eye candy, items, lands, creatures and equipment which differ from the current by nothing but stats and audio-visual qualities. And this is when the adventure becomes bland.

I guess that's also partially why Minecraft for many is more long-lasting than Terraria (a good game in it's own regard) to the point of people creating new mods and videos even now, setting up new servers and discuss it in the forums. Three-dimensional world and advanced redstone mechanisms in it, allowing players to set new challenges and create truly wonderful stuff (like making an actual computer game inside of minecraft through the use of logic gates and whatnot) keeps the game from going bland, adds new exciting element of the choosing and pacing fitting player's ideals. To that add far bigger and quite varied land to explore. And while I do not expect nor even really need exactly same possibilities in Starbound, as a player I need many goals, choices, dillemas and alternatives so the gameplay won't turn into a grind for the sake of grind/shinies.

Pardon me for relatively big post, maybe rant even. I want my standpoint to be clear. Hope it is now, at least for those who were able to read through it all.

Unrelated Witness but I just want to say I like you. You've only made a handful of posts but all of them are very well thought out and you bring up some very valid points.

And to keep somewhat on topic; I'm still curious to see if playing as different races'll be purely aesthetic or will they add different gameplay elements.

It sid NPCs will have needs.
Does that mean NPCs can die if the needs are not met?
And if so, will entire quest lines be lost or will a new NPC pick up the quest line if said NPC dies?

What platforms will this game be available in?

My interpretation is that NPC living with you will ask for things like maybe a rare plant that would make their room look better or something you'd have to go and find. Nothing that they need to live on hahaha well, maybe. That'd be an interesting questline!
