I've been using Windows 8 for several months now and the layout is the same as Windows 7 (other than the start menu which is arguably better), customization is roughly the same (I'd like you to elaborate here because I've yet to find something I can't do on Windows 8 that I could do on Windows 7), compatibility problems I've yet to run into and quite frankly its just easier to do shit with it, which I'd call an improvement.

Torchlight 2 in it's opening uses OS calls that were added to XP SP3 for reading settings files. This is the only reason why it doesn't work with XP64 (which is stuck at SP2 since MS didn't release SP3 on it). Another 2d sandbox game recently up on early access steam is Windows 7 for it's minimum system requirements (though the single dev on the project notes that they want to re-include XP support in the future).

Also, I can't see any current game being for all Windows. Win95, Win98, ME, Win 3.1... that would be crazy to support.

Yeah, Not only are there the system calls to worry about but also some things like newer DirectX and such do not support older OSes, one of the selling point of new Windows is always that it will be the only one with official support for the newest version of stuff like that.

I read through it all, and that was a nice experience you had with Linux.
Sadly, I am not interested since I'm mainly a PC Gamer on my computer, so buying a Linux just to use WINE (which doesn't work with the most resource-demanding games) isn't really to my liking.

Some people have been suggesting me to get Linux and using it together with Windows. But honestly I don't see the point of that.
Linux to use the Internet and Windows to play games?
Works alright on paper, but then I'd have to restard my PC everytime I want to do something different. Not to mention I'm used to the layout of Win 7 and I wouldn't change it with anything.

I've seen some games coming to Linux. VALVe for example ported TF2, and L4D2 too if I'm not mistaken.
That's good, but at this rate, Linux will have in 2020 the games that Windows has now in 2013.

So yeah. I'm all for change, so if anyone would give me a valid reason (more than one, actually) to get Linux, I'd be more than thankful.
    Okay.
Well I tried it and didn't like it.

    Now what.

Yeah well, linux has just recently been getting gaming love (for a long time it was saw as a non-market not worth putting time in for porting to) and it will likely not see the level of games that windows does, purely because games that use things like XNA, DirectX, and .Net would have to be ported to things like OpenGL and Mono's .NET. A list of all games ported to and available in Linux via steam can be found it the linux category on steam. I think like it was like 90/230 or something from my own personal collection.

Dual Booting is really only for if you want it, the main idea is you use Linux and only boot into Windows when you must (or the other way around if you so choose). The problem is with you being a PC gamer there is near little reason for you to use Linux at the moment as you would feel the urge to boot windows every time you wanted to play a AAA title. Really if you want to try Linux on a gaming computer, just get some VM software, get a Linux ISO, install it, add the guest addons and run it in seamless (if you have the power of course). That or just leave it in the VM.

Also WINE has to work blindly in order to not be shut down for copyright violation and so it does take months to port new games to even brozen. You do not have to purchase Linux (buyable Linux are usually either corporate version or a user version preloaded with everything, but most are free). However if you want WINE with better DirectX wrappers you have to buy CrossOver (the paid version of WINE, they use the cash to buy right to make the wrapper for microsoft). To see what will work under WINE and how well check out http://appdb.winehq.org/.

Really the only reason I would recommend Linux would be, it's free (well most are free, some aren't), it is less virus prone (Mac and Linux CAN get viruses, just FYI), With a liveCD (more likely liveDVD or liveUS:cool: version you can boot into it for things like banking to be extra safe (this method DOES not save any changes to the OS though, unless you go through the steps to do it on the USB and it can wear the flash out faster with constant write operations.), it is really good for getting into a borked install of windows. with my favorite software of Testdisk and Photorec you can retrieve data from your hard drive if it comes to that.

Actually if you want to talk more Linux is might be best to just PM me or we can move to a topic in off-topic general.

Then it isn't for you, and I'm sorry you don't enjoy it.

  7. Filipfonky

Yeah, it's really a case of "you either like it, or hate it to hell and wouldn't wish it on your worst enemy oh god its so fucking bad".

  8. Sousuke Kuroda

    Sousuke Kuroda Spaceman Spiff

The latter stance is hard to comprehend seeing as it and Windows 7 are almost identical and all that really differs is the way you access menus.

  9. Filipfonky

    Filipfonky Cosmic Narwhal

That's the main problem. They are nearly identical, when Windows 8 is supposed to be a completely new Operative System.
There's not as much incentive to go from Windows 7 to Windows 8, as there was to go from Windows XP to Windows 7.
    Vista does not exist.

So let me get his straight. You say this:

    Then this:

I think you need to make up your mind on this issue. Do you also hate Windows 7, and if not, then why does the fact that Windows 8 isn't all that different piss you off so much?

  13. Filipfonky

    Filipfonky Cosmic Narwhal

It's pretty much the same: on the things it does right.

It's terrible: on the things it does wrong.

So to sum it up, it did many things wrong for me (the UI, the versatility, compatibility with some games etc), and the only things that it did right are the same ones that Windows 7 does.
Did I make myself clear now?

In a very ambiguous way that somewhat contradicts previous claims. Yeah.

Maybe Filipfonky could stop posting off topic things. And don't come at me saying it's others and you meant something else.
This thread had already been locked because of off topic, stop it please.

It's not contradicting at all, read my previous posts again. Just saying "no, it's contradicting" is not a valid argument.
I'll sum it up once again:

Windows 8 does some things right and some things wrong. The problem is that the ones that it does right are done exactly the same (if not better) in Windows 7, so there is little to no reason to buy Win 8 over 7.

Woah there buddy, calm down, you could have just said "please stop posting off-topic stuff".

Besides, if you hadn't noticed, it's been about 140 pages of off-topic discussions.

  17. Sousuke Kuroda

Notice I never said "no" in that post.

  18. I'm just going to say overall that it's a waste of time and posts to argue about opinions.
Flipfonky doesn't like Windows 8, Sousuke does. You aren't going to convince each other of anything.
Also Mianso ought to notice that Flipfonky isn't the only off-topic poster, so directly targeting him with your comments seems somewhat like you're baiting for an argument.

Anyway, I don't know exactly what you could possibly discuss in a topic like this, since suggestions have their own forum and each update post has their own thread.

That's mostly specs though, right? I mean come one, those computers are SO OLD.

  20. Aki7

They are old. Though I'm not on those, I am on XP64 SP2. There are games that don't support my OS. I'm hoping Starbound does.
