List of Announced Game Information (Retired due to release)

  1. I thought the little things would be the last thing they'd add, since it's more important to have, y'know, the engine done.

After all, you don't paint the house until you've built it.

Maybe they're just talking about the highlights while the rest of the team makes the work that would, simply put, not be pleasant to hear about.
There are just some things that while are not very interesting, have to be done and may not be worth a proper mention (or illegible for the casual* community)

    * - in this case, casual ie. the non-programmer part of the community for which such "updates" would be out of context.

But they are the last thing they're adding.

They've already built the house, now they're painting it.

Considering they only recently got clothed humanoid NPCs into the game it seems more like they're putting up a roof.

You compared the house to the engine, which from the videos we've seen, is completed.

Eh really the engine is more the foundations of the house.

Okay I think we should stop.

  9. (I made the comparison, not sousuke.)

Anyway, clothed humanoids is more of a "We took the time to code for the engine to pick logical clothes and generate npc:s with them". I'm sure they could have done that way before but it's less work when you have all of the clothes put in and also it's not actually a keystone feature in the game - There aren't that many features that -require- npc:s to be clothed prior implementation -> their implementation can be left for fairly late.

This is too ambiguous for me to be willing to preorder. Is this Windows 8 only? Windows 7? XP SP3? XP? Is there the possibility of refund if our OS isn't supported?

It's windows as in all windows. I don't think it's possible to make a game for just a specific windows OS.

    It's for any Windows.

One less reason to get Win 8, if you ask me.

Never understood the hate for Win 8, works just as well if not better than Win 7 and people act like its the worst thing to happen to mankind since the holocaust.

  14. (for me the hatred towards windows 8 comes from the long tenure of XP -> the gap between 7 and 8 feels too short -> makes me feel like they are constantly threatening to pull support out from under me unless I buy their new system. Also I heard that it's even less customizable as a system than Vista was? Also of course most games apparently don't work on it.)

I think Starbound will work pretty good in XP, Vista and 7 at least? They've made efforts to make the game work even with less powerful computers, so...

Never understood the love for Win 8, it has a terrible layout for desktop computers, it has less customization, more compatibility problems, doesn't improve on anything, and people act like its the second coming of jesus.

  16. I have a Windows 8 Phone, and I can tell you it works muuuuch better on phones and tablets. (what with the touch screen, and easy customization)
I guess Microsoft was just trying to make all of their devices run similarly, and leaned a little too much toward phones/tablets.

I have tried windows 8 (free MS products since i used to be a comp engineering major). It was nice enough but using something made so much for touch on my none touch computer irks me to no end.

Win8 is not about being customizable or anything, it is about creating a homogenous OS for desktop/laptop, phone, and tablet. Like samsung they are trying to do the Apple ecosystem thing where the most fluid computing experience comes from buying microsoft brand stuff. If you ever watched their 2019 vision video they seem to plan to be so ingrained in computing you use their stuff everywhere (your coffee, newspaper, on a plane, at schools worldwide, at your job, as your phone).

That's exactly why Windows 7 is still the best OS to have on a desktop PC.

As for phones, there's really no need to be specific as those are only needed to call, get messages, use some apps and go to the Internet. So any OS without too many bugs is decent.

Windows 8 is indeed designed for mobiles, and may even be a great system on those (I haven't tried it on a mobile device), but for a desktop PC not used just for Facebook and Youtube, Windows 7 is still the best option.
Hah, did not know about that video. I'll watch it later, thanks for the info.

Anyways, just to stir up the discussion a bit, anyone here using Linux or Mac? Care to tell why?

Be sure to look up some stuff on it after, interestingly near all that tech already exist and MS just needs to buy it, on and people worry about the fact their is no MS branding on anything. Their is a less interesting (to me) vision for office that goes along with it, basically it is like office meets skype premium meets gotomeeting if i recall right.

I occasionally use linux (and for awhile tried to make a distro, i still have the base for it made in Linux from Scratch). I use it because it is free, i'm geeky, and can rationally solve my own tech problems (or at least google them). WINE worked for a lot of my gaming needs for quite a while. Also there is compiz, it is utterly pointless but 12 different desktop background, a skydome, about 12 different cube caps (that i could cycle through), and being able to do silly things to the display was entertaining. Experimental head tracking was wonky but neat.

The package management system was neat as well (kinda like the apple store or the windows store just not as fancy and around a long time, their have been remakes to make it fancier ala Ubuntu software center). But being able to have a program and all the programs it needs to function correctly download at the same time is neat. As is not having to attempt to reinstall software you already have (Looking at directx and VCredist install everytime i install anything from steam at all).

Lastly I know it is the bane of linux and everyone wants it to crawl into a dark hole and die like it's windows and mac counterparts but I really like the terminal. It is nice to just whip it open toss in something like "Sudo apt-get install blender" and get the version of blender from the OSes official repo (or more likely bleeding edge custom ones I added) without having to open a browser or the package management program. Also with something like Guake you can make it drop down all FPS style and make it feel more like cheating at a video game then harking back to the olden days of computing. Umm... lastly is there is a way to kill the desktop if it was frozen (this was turned off by default in some distros now), you can switch over to a virtual terminal as long as the keyboard still works and kill a program to regain control if you ever need to, and you can do very silly things like mess with the 3 status LEDs or the internal speakers. Also it is quite customizable.

Sorry for the wall of text all.
