List of Announced Game Information (Retired due to release)

Discussion in 'Starbound FAQs, Q&A, and General Help' started by Blue, Feb 24, 2012.

  1. You doubt the knowledge of the almighty Blue?
But seriously guys, this will get updated. It's just that they like to update them with a lot at once, not every single time something is announced.

Each time I read over this list I find something new. I am very thankful to Blue for making this long and amazing list even if not everything is set in stone. I guess I should also be thankful that I either don't read very well or have a poor memory!

  3. Relinies

It used to be exactly that, though!
There isn't even that much coming out now, so blue would have time to catch up.
It still wouldn't be the first time he stopped updating, so I'm inclined to believe it's not going to be updated soon.

  4. I guess you've been here much longer than me, so I wouldn't know, but I remember seeing a couple of big updates.
So maybe they're gonna do that again, and they're waiting for more information to be released?

There have been a handful of major updates, which came out the same time we got a lot of information.
I don't see why Blue would stop updating this to wait for more information with such a large time period of almost no information as far as I've seen.

    My guess(es)?
1: They're close, or what they consider close, to a releasable game.
2: They're caught up in development and just can't take the time to compile what they have without slowing progress.
3: Similar to 2, but merely want to add more to the game before releasing an update, and aren't sure where/what to stop the update at.

There is also the fact that Blue might be occupied with his own game developement or rather at this stage team finding and planning. This is considering that this Blue here is the same as the Blue from the IRC chat but I'm pretty sure they are.
Dont know what game I am talking about? Check that out ; http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1587003731/clockwork-menagerie

Blue isn't part of the Starbound dev team. As far as I know, he knows as much about the game as we do.

Correct sir, likely on all counts.
So I'm pretty sure Blue isn't updating this list. But I'm sure a kind mod would do it if we provided the information not on there. Mods have updated it before, after all.

    I misunderstood that. My apologies.

Thinking about it, though, they'd have to release the info for Blue, or a mod, to post it.

I really need to not reply when tired... I become even less coherent.

I'd meant it overall as the availability for Blue to post information the developers release. I'd thrown out a few of my thoughts on why there hasn't been much information lately, and because of that, Blue and/or the forum staff aren't able to accurately update the post.

I'm sure others have said this before but I also wanted to say how I believe that the devs don't want too much information released and how much I agree with that. It would be wonderful to be guaranteed a great game that you were sure to enjoy... yet not know a single thing about it. It would be amazing to jump into a game and be completely surprised at to what you got, what you were able to do, and what was available too you. Although in today's world that just can not be successful since people need to know at least something about the game they are going to buy. Just how much information is required for a game to be successfully released, I don't know, but what I have seen so far gives me the idea that it fits the type of games I tend to love. That being said I think I would like to avoid any future information being released so that I will get to explore what possibilities this game has to offer. How successful I will be at not looking at new info however... is another issue entirely...

It's all about how you word it. The key is to give general ideas and not specifics. Like, say there are "a ton of different weapon varieties", but don't say "We have things like rocket launchers, hand grenades, two-handed axes... (etc etc)", which... so far, they've done exactly that. So, I'd say we know a lot about StarBound, but we definitely don't know everything. We have a general idea of the big picture, but the details are likely going to be new and exciting.

Like, I was reading the "planets" section and I was blown away at the fact that non-infinite-sized worlds will loop around as if they were actually spherical. That blew my goddamn MIND.

Then I read about the ocean and it says "
For oceans, content changes as you get deeper. The ocean floor is awesome.".

That's more of that selective description I was talking about. I definitely understand that this is good news, but it doesn't give away exactly what kind of content I should be looking forward to.

I think it's also very hard for the devs in that same idea of releasing game content. I found this game by luck, nothing else, because it does not have the amount of press it may deserve. The problem with this however is a balance in conflicting wants. On one hand the devs may want a game that surprises you, and like DJFlare84 said it does come down to the wording at times, although everything that is revealed is one less thing that can leave us in awe when the game is released. I'll use an example from what DJFlare84 said; imagine that you didn't know that non-infinite worlds wrap around? Imagine going in one direction then suddenly coming across something that you build... then realizing that you had just ran a circle around the entire planet! This brings me to the other hand which is that games only survive if people play them and the only way people are going to play your game, assuming it's good, is for you to advertise them and build hype. Hype sells games and advertisements allow people to know about said hyped games. A game needs remarkable features to gain attention and to build hype otherwise it seems as if it is not a remarkable game and the only way to do that is to announce some of the remarkable features a game does have. Wording does come into play with announcing such things and still allows for some mystery however this is where the balance comes into play. To release remarkable content information or not to release remarkable content information... that is the question on whether you want a birthday present wrapped or if you'd rather receive cash.

In regards to the birthday thing, I'd rather receive cash... (but that's just because practically nobody knows me well enough to get me anything GOOD)

But anyway, I get yer point, and it's a good one. All I'm saying is that there's no need to worry about Chucklefish releasing too much information and leaving people jaded. I think they've struck pretty close to that balance you keep advising toward.

I would look at it, but I want the game to be completely new to me. I want no info what so ever because it would probably make it less fun if you find something and already know what it does.
