* some crafting is done by a 3D printer.
* ore can be turned into ink for the printer, with higher quality ore with higher ratio.
* printer ink might be the currency for the game (like "scrap" in FTL)
* the space station is no longer your base, the space ship is.
- space ship is a private base (MP wise)
- space station is on an asteroid and for the entire server to build and mess with.

i love the fact that even in MP we'll have a private area, it's like Terraria's piggy bank, just more grandiose.
the 3D printer suppose to have some animation, so i have mixed feelings about that, crafting animation is awesome, but to have 1 major crafting material will make my box organizing very boring.

 

I rather like that the space station is placed on an asteroid, allows for more custom construction, every server would pretty much have their own unique looking space station.
Also, gonna make my spaceship very homey, disco lights and all! In space, no one can hear you PARTY!

 

I love this! I'm going to have to read the whole thing, but I definitely had the same thought of having a space station on an asteroid in my thread, first bullet point. I don't necessarily think they got the idea from me (I got the idea from Mass Effect), but I think it's awesome!

 

i think i read somewhere about shooting/teraforming the planet from orbit, but shooting down other ships and then looting them on the ground sounds awesome! going around, looking for a crater, having some rare blueprints and such in it

 

What happens when the player's spacecraft gets destroyed? Found myself wondering about that just now.

 

Interesting. The "3d Printer" might as well just call them fabricators that you feed resources into.

I like the idea of the Space Ship being a mobile player base with the Space Station being a large collective base.

There was a thread in the indeas sections that proposed shooting things down in spectacular fashion and I think it included space ships.

If your ship is destroyed I imagine it would drop cargo, cash, and/or other things for the victor to collect. Your ship is rebuilt and you respawn somewhere else likely from the space station would be my bet.

Thinking from an MP perspective, especially coop oriented servers, I am actually kind of excited about the potential this game holds in that regard.

 

Golden Toilets need to be added to this list...[This in its own right is a special feature =P relieve your self in style with the golden throne]

Na if I wanted to make a joke I would have mentioned how it would be too soft to serve properly as a toilet - would have to be labeled gold plated throne.

I don't think the "ink" would be a good currency. The raw materials to make the ink could just as easily be currency. Or you know actual currency be currency.

 

Ink as currency makes a lot of sense though... if implemented with the 3d printer or fabricator it would stand to reason that it is the most valuable resource as most if not all tools/furniture pieces could be crafted from it making it extremely valuable. If a paper currency was implemented what would it be based off of? The US dollar is based off of faith in our government right now but at one point was based off of gold. So for arguments sake the US dollar is based off gold. From a game standpoint having both gold and paper dollars be used as currency seems a bit redundant. [Saying Star-bucks(or pixels?) would be based off of ink making it redundant]

 

Even the value of gold is not static. All currency is "faith based" in it's inherit value to any given group in that it only has a value as assigned to it by the people doing the trading. All the measure of money does is give us a metric in the game measure the estimated value of a resource, item, or raw material. "Ink" is just a refined resource. Will the "ink" (really they need a better name or acroynum or something) be used to fabricate everything like food and healing items or just some items? The actual materials that give you that would be more valuable by comparison. The higher tier the raw material the more value it will have. You could make the entire game enconomy run off of the raw materials if they wanted.

Someone made a good arguement that Pixels are effectively the "ink" asset. In that everything in the game is made of pixels. You add your pixels or ink into the machine and get your item. Which works out as "ink" as the currency more or less.

 

So I am missing something otherwise you just stated that ink IS a good currency source >.>.
