Liquid blockers

There should be a type of block that creatures and players can pass through, but not liquids. This would allow for easier underwater building and would have many other interesting applications. It might also be helpful to make the block able to switch on and off. It could then be used in flood gates. it could also be set to allow liquid through in only one direction. Or these three settings could be made into three different blocks, which would simplify its use.

This idea sounds full of win! Maybe the Block that does this could be some kinda Gel? :DD *Recalls fond memories of the Terraria tConfig Experimento Gels Mod*

its called a door,,,, not to be a troll or anything.

A Door won't suffice for this. When the Door's open, the Liquid is gonna come on through along with the Player. The Specs for this idea call for something that lets Players & other kinds of lifeforms through, but NOT liquids, at the same time. Doors will block both people & liquid when shut, & let both people & liquid through when open. ;)

Like, some kind of laser door or... or maybe even a bubble!

This is an interesting idea with a myriad of interesting applications.

    I support it.

Playing Devil's Advocate, however, do you have a logical reason in mind for living bodies (humans, especially, seeing as how they're something like 50 - 80% water, don't know offhand) being able to pass through unharmed? We're dealing with magic-future science so it doesn't have to make sense, but it'd be nice if it did.

The door could be tooled to look for amino acids or silicaceous equivalents. Once they do detect such a chemical combination, the door should make a sphere of influence, like what the membrane of a cell does with oil and water, in which other chemicals are not affected, water or not. This would be to the point where you may come through a bit damp through the door you dont get the enitre ocean joining in on the fun.

I believe that he means an airlock chamber by "door" where you would have two doors connected to a computer (http://community.playstarbound.com/index.php?threads/wiring-with-computers.8006/) which would allow travel between the sea and a watertight structure without damaging the interior of the structure.

Airlocks would be a nice idea.

in fact you could have it like this.
Early Tech: make do with what you got, good luck making a functioning system out of basic parts.
Middle Tech: Airlocks, a pre-constructed item with a pump on the floor leading to whichever side is submerged already, and two doors which will only open when a) the other is closed, and b) the room is dry.
Late Tech: Forcefields, a simple, sleek water/liquid blocking device that also works on hostile mobs and even unwanted players.

A Gel That only lets really dense objects through? sound plausible :)

Thats an interesting idea, but it wouldn't really have any security measures to it.

Maybe a special bubble like oricalcum said.

I think the detection of amino acids would be kinda more sciency :) That and if it doesnt get added to the game, you could always just build an airlock room like I did in terraria. Big wood platform over a pit, a room with two doors, open one the ocean coems in with you and goers down the hole and then you shut the door. What gets in goes down the drain. Use pump to drain pit periodically.

Course in space where the vaacuum would suck you out.... well, what aboput miniships coming out of your space station? I honeslty wouldnt want to land a spacecraft as important as the main flagship when I could send miniships with supplies instead. For that to happen theres got to be some sort of airlock or forcefield, (like youd see in Star Wars) to block out the vaacumm of space.

I guess when ya get down to it all, this is a video game, screw logic.

hmm we have an extra fun bit here, the water physics are slightly more realistic, including pressure equalization, this is gonna make underwater work FUN.

i do like amino acids idea but would it allow other races in :D

Course it would, it could even be attuned to silicaceous amino acids as well, seeing as silicon shares the same amount of chemical bonds as carbon does, and is a common ingredient found in stone -w- Things like trolls could stroll right in no problem.

auuh awsome!i didnt know trolls had different amino acids

Well see, theyre silicaceous, this is why trolls are so tough, theyre made of rocks. Silicon is higher on the periodic table than carbon, however carbon and silicon share the same amount of chemical bonds, so its pretty plausible that you could have Amino acids with silicon instead of carbon in the bonds.

wait trolls are made of rocks?

Trolls are what you would call silicaceous lifeforms. Yes. While carbon dioxide is in fact a gas, silicon dioxide is in fact quartz, and not a gas. And a commonplace material. But see, whether it be quartz or a gas, theyre both chemicals that can be broken down, and the bonding silicon and carbon atoms can be used to make chemical combinations that are exactly like each other, except that theyre either silicon or carbon, of course.

Carbon happens to be a gas in its elemental form, and silicon happens to be a corrosive greyish metal in its elemental form often used in computer chips as a conductor... so I would assume said composition in trolls would probably be affected adversely by temperture, especially in the cognitve functions. But still, amino acids are amino acids, if they are int he same combination of atoms or not, and thusly would have some repulsive properties to water. :p
