Hmm. I wonder what the collective noun is for linux users? Would it be a geek of linux users? :geek: (Don't shoot me! I use linux myself!)

Maybe a LUG (linux user group) of Linux uses.

But it was made by a Linus... also a Richard if you count GNU.

    Yay. ^^

Sweet, I work with Linux myself, nice site you have.

I have a nooblet Linux question ... because I know very little about it.

What does a Linux user do when he wants to run software made for Windows ... Windows 7 for example? Does Linux emulate Windows to run it, or does a Linux user just have to wait for a Linux version of whatever Windows software they were hoping to use?

It's hard to beat free ... I paid $130 for my copy of Windows 7 and it made my wallet feel like I was removing it's kidney.

Both. Some can be run in Wine (more-less emulator of windows API), some can be run in Wine with a bit of tweaking, other just don't and have to have a Linux port. In case of software there are either eqivalent, similiar, or same pieces of software on linux.

If you wanna game, forget it, you pretty much need to dual boot (have both Windows and Linux on same machine) as not many games release on linux, but for things like browsing internet/watching videos/learning how to code it's nice

I want to add a few things to XANi's post. With Wine there are a few tools to help you used it such as winetricks (used to install DLLs and stuff) and playonlinux (uses scripts to help install the proper version of wine and install the program). Personally I don't use it but for like 30 USD you can buy a license for CrossOver which is basically wine with some added DirectX wrappers I believe. Check out the Wine appbd site to see if a program runs on wine, how well, and what does not work so well (like spore had an issue with shadows).

I do agree that your best bet for gaming or specialty program is to dual boot. However gaming on linux is not as bleak as it used to be. Of my like 200+ steam games i think 60 or so support linux. Now if you live on modern AAA games linux will suck as they never launch for linux and it takes wine 6 months before it even gets to the point of getting the program to kinda sorta load at all. However we now have Unity (unity web player requires chrome with NaCl) so some popular unity made games now support linux.

Lastly if you like retro gaming things like DOSbox emulate most the old classic perfectly. ScummVM if you like the point and clicks. You can always try some of the linux games, most are free and can be fun. Sauerbraten (Cube 2) is a neat shooter with a live co-op cube based level building system (i was playing with it long before Minecraft). Linux has a very strangely high number of arena shooters as well if you like those too.

    I feel geeky now. :geek:

    Geeky, my friend, is good.

Do you think Linux is slowly getting more mainstream? Any chance for full software compatibility, eventually?

If you ask me, Microsoft had it's time, I can't believe they still have as much of a strange-hold on the market as they still do.

It is getting some footing definitely. Full support? Not currently, as long as MS has the market linux or mac will ever see full support for all software since it is just most cost effective to focus on Windows. Heck I am not sure Minecraft would have supported linux if Mojang had not used java. Valve's support is helping and I think Office 365 might make using Office on linux more viable (openoffice and libreoffice are great but there still some issues with cross compatibility).

I don't know, I don't think Microsoft will have that strong of a hold any more but I not sure they will get beaten, sorry I'm a tad pessimistic.

Okay so this went far off-topic.

Hoping it's quite easy to set up a server for Starbound when it eventually arrives.

It's probably gonna be just double-click the server program and it's up. And for the first time, configuring and port forwarding.

Sorry I like to talk Linux~

Hopefully. Maybe have to set +X. Hopefully they have a no-gui and a gui version. I know it is old and the bane of mainstream Linux but I love me some terminal.
