is this a new thing? I can't recall ever having triggered it before 1.1, and I do make a habit of befriending him. And also likely have been at the place at the right time before now. Also what does it do really? I can't seem to figure.
It's not new. I got it relatively early. As for what it does? Err. Well. It's bait. Someone who doesn't hate fishing would probably be better able to tell you if it's actually any better than the regular stuff though.
it was in before 1.1, it triggers at night at a certain ammount of hearts. also it reduces the time between bites by 62-ish%, compared to the 50% of normal bait. (edit: also i think it might raise the chance of fish and not trash? or it might be placebo from it requiring a stupid ammount of resources compared to a minimal boost in biterate)
To be honest the first time the event triggered for me I sat speechless just thinking *WTF*. The sound effects coming from that tent was very creepy and then when he says it's a bait recipe I actually burst out laughing.
Oh Yoba, that cutscene xD Definitely not new, no. And the bait is pretty useless in my opinion. Regular bait does the job just fine.
If nothing else it's a great use for fiber and slime lol. Especially slime with the slime raising. Just wasn't sure since the description is vague.

It's redundant in most cases but it is pretty much a MUST if you wanna fish the dreaded Lava Eel in the mines. Unless you care to spend a good couple days for it to bite ONCE and then fail to actually catch the damn thing. Also notice that Linus is apparently willing to eat monster meat...
My opinion, as well. The only thing I add to regular bait is the trap bobber. (Well, and crabpots, but that's another matter.)
It functions like regular bait but a little better. Honestly not worth it when regular bait is so easy to get and still very effective.

The main reason why you need Wild Bait is because you MUST have a useful tackle, like a Trap Bobber or something along those lines because, while the Lava Eel isn't the hardest fish in the game, you really are gonna want to kill yourself when it bites once after spending an entire day on the mines just to have it escape. In fact, i consider the Lava Eel the most annoying fish to catch solely because of how infrequent it's spawn rate is, the Legendaries at least bite often so you get plenty chances to try again, but with the Lava Eel, if you miss it once, you are pretty much boned, have to take a couple deep breaths and get ready to spend another couple days for it to bite again.
