Legit Question: Why can't spears and daggers be directed?

I find this always-pointing-forward-to-attack-with-melee concept to be soooooooo archaic. Why can't spears be like the ones in Terraria, same with daggers (not like Terraria, but whatever). In Terraria, daggers were useless, they couldn't fire projectiles like in Starbound and always attacked forward (and you had to spam-click). Now with spears, even if they couldn't spawn with a projectile, what reason is there to make them always aim forward, maybe for basic-intelligence AI but for the player, what possible reason is there to make spears more useless than a uranium rod?? Daggers I kind of expected to suck, but with the projectile mechanic, even they should be able to be aimed. Heck, since the 1.2.2 Terraria update, some melee weapons can fire projectiles and though the weapons themselves (save for spears!!!!) have the same attack animation, always attacking forward, the projectiles they fire can be aimed!

To me, the fact that, in Starbound, spears and daggers are pathetic but can fire projectiles sometimes is like rubbing in the fact that they've been dumbed down, worsened and made useless all while having a potentially interesting mechanic on them just to troll you.

 

I don't know if this question has been addressed in other forums but I agree pretty strongly with you. It would also help counter the increasingly frustrating 'bird' AI. I don't usually post but I do think this is an issue well worth addressing.

I can't even begin to count the amount of times I've died simply because I couldn't attack an enemy standing just below me.

 

he was already doing it right before he compiled the last update, he got most of it done it was just some trouble with left and right had the spear in op hand and made the animation move funny but i think for the most of it he finished so hopefully next update!
