    Gotta ask, how isn't it?

Just saying it isn't, isn't verry...clear, and Id like to see why ya think that.

The lack of light is quickly offset by torches that can be placed everywhere, more or less. Sure it takes coal and wood, but coal is rather plentiful and trees can always be regrown. The lantern also only illuminates a bit of the area around you, and without the lantern or torches, the area is pitch black, yet you have to utilize the tools or the enemies will attack you and you won't even know it. It's a clear case of the AI seeing perfectly well no matter the light level, yet only the player is hindered. If anything, it's easier and smarter to use torches since you're taught that from the start via tutorials and don't need any oil at all to make them, leaving lantern sticks something you get after leaving your first planet. The first planet that, mind you, forces the player to go down to the core itself to grab a large number of core fragments. They do glow, and so does the lava, but that's about it.

It makes no sense when they say "Oh, it adds challenge, you can't see very well without it!" That's what torches and lanterns (especially looted ones) are for. I intend on using the Light Drones mod, but that has natural progression through the tiers, and it's much more sci-fi than a stupid lantern on a stick. I'd expect a lantern on a stick from Terraria or Minecraft, not freaking Starbound.

Fair enough, though personaly, I think its more of a "I really cant be assed" kind of deal.

Some people just cant get themselves to farm, others to chop up some wood from time to time, or maybe newer players might just forget about making them, ho knows?

Some still have their jimies rustled about the ore distribution, ya never know.

    Still, mostly agree.

Haven't been on the forums for a while. So, I got the mod that allows you to have glowing ores.
Remember some people saying to use the MM to find ores? It's pointless.

From what I've found, if you're digging straight down, 95% of all ores are 16+ blocks away from your mine. The only thing I found within the radius of the MM's scan 3 times or less was coal.

Question, have ya diged atleast 50 blocks down?

Then, ya should be able to find some caverns and ore generation starts to get decent, since ore is no longer at surface level anymore.

I did find more ores after mining down in the caves.

I know the lantern is not as bright as a flashlight but why when the lantern that u place on the ground and the lantern stick u use on the back are the same and both are not as bright as the on u place on the ground?

I like the lantern stick but for me it doesn't emit any light at all. Before the current version I played unstable and the lantern stick was as dark as it was in the long lasting version before that. If my character is in total darkness the lantern stick does absolutely nothing.

I admit it's weak but it shouldn't do nothing at all unless you have it in the wrong back slot.

Sounds like a bug... unless you have your back against a wall (the light mechanic has changed slightly, the lantern need to be in free space and not hidden inside a wall block).

it's the same thing as mining. you need the full set of tools for full capacity, use a flashlight, some flares, torches, light giving weapons and MM scanning to find ores. use bombs to make shafts, MM/picks/drills to dig around and get the ores. it's fun and engaging and with the microdungeons, there's usually something surprising to find.

I use machine pistol with flame to spot some ore. They give great amount of light.

Personally, i think the lantern stick should be available early game.
Also, why havent they allowed us to tie our flashlights to our heads.
A flashlight in the helmet slot, that functions like one.
Lighting up whatever your aiming at, and still using both your hands.

The lantern stick is available as soon as you hit T2 (steel). That is pretty early game.

There are hats that provide light (ice helmet, biolumin helmet, light helmet, miner's hat), but you have to first find one, and then you realize that they do not function in the cosmetic slot. You have to forgo a protective helmet to use one.

    It's more natural now.

    Tested both slots... nothing.
Probably this is not quite the right place but it might be related. Since the lantern stick is not emitting any light (for me) there is no sense in carrying the thing around - but there is this tech, called... light rig? Doesn't do anything either. The description says tapping any directional key should somehow light up the area but nothing.
So... did anybody else notice this and I better go bother the bug section?

Light rig works like a flashlight in that it puts a similar beam of light in the direction you tap.

Huh... maybe a visit in the bug section is in order. Someone else might have this problem, too. I'd hate to be the only one. :wtf:

(Light rig puts a realy weak light btw. So it isent visable in a slightly lith room, try it in a pitch dark cave, and i realy mean pitch dark).
