I could translate some german if i got time. Often, localizations are soooo terrible in video games. Even the "big" games are translated really worse. IMO only Ubisoft does a good work considering translations. I mean, translations are about 98% ok, but sometimes you can see that the translator just looked in an online dictionary and took the first hit he got, totally screwing a game's atmosphere.
I prefer playing video games in english, because the games are mostly cheaper and guaranteed uncut in England and you got no Translation misstakes. You'll mostly get a good Synchronisation, too. As example Dead Space 2 german voice synch is totally emotionless in some situations.

So I would like to participate in an eventual localization process to do it right ;)

They will most likely ask for help later on maybe even in the beta. And with such a variated community like Starbound
we would get the game translated in no time.

Yeah, making it able for the community to make the languages for the game, as with minecraft, wouldn't be a bad idea. Then I could have it in my Norwegian dialect for once.

My opinion is that games shouldn't be translated to begin with. Too much is lost and changed in translation and that makes interaction with other players difficult as they call the same things by different names.

English is an essential skill anyway.

Please tell me you're joking. That's the most egocentric thing I've heard all day.

I would agree if I were a native English speaker.

However I admit that such policy couldn't be applied everywhere.

It's better for non-English speakers or those with English as a second language to have the option to have the game in their language. It's up to them if they use it in their language or English. A lot of people do speak English, so the devs are really just covering their bases.

At least for countries, in which it can be learned in school, i agree. English is (compared to others) an extremely easy-to-learn language. Still, there are always people who don't get along well with foreign languages or people who'd like to have their media in their language to be able to fully concentrate themselves on it.
Just imagine yourself playing a totally intense game in a foreign language you understand pretty good, but suddenly you encounter a word you don't know. This could screw the game's atmosphere a lot. And even if you're doing well with a language (or even if you're a native speaker), this problem can possibly occur.

    Hello!
I'm really into this game but as any non-English speaker country most people doesn't speak English. So i want help to translate to my mother tongue if it possible as soon as the game reach beta.

Or maybe talk to a NPC in a town and learn it for a certain amount of pixels. That'd be cool..imo.

I just don't want to see this game with Russian langue, i had enough from many other projects.

But i am willing to help with translation on Russian or Latvian anyway.

  20. I can only imagine that translating a game like Starbound with so many procedurally generated elements will be a pain in the arse ...
