So, I think being able to land of the planet is pretty cool idea. TBH, being crashed on the first planet and having to repair your ship to fly out of it would make even more sense. Why the idea tho? Well, simply put - you either build your base on the ship, or on the ground. You can't have both atm, which is kind of sad. Many problems of - how would it be threaten as an object, terrain around it, etc. This is subject to discussion, but that bare idea seems quite obvious to me. Maybe need to have a flat terrain to land on, and then protect the cells which it stands on? Hangar-object, maybe? What if ship could be damaged or destroyed, so you would be stuck somewhere? That could be fun/risky, to some degree. As a side note I'd say that being able to teleport on to your ship just like that is just boring and kind of abusive early on, as you can just teleport down, hit some stuff, teleport up. Being forced to stay on the ground early on would take that abuse away. Sorry if there was one already, been browsing a little lazy.
yeah it would make more sense for the ship to fall and then you have to fix it than it just floating in space.
According to the lore, you escape from your planet, your ship is damaged and dies down in an orbit. Not by crashing on a planet. Shuttles could be a thing, though. Could probably replace the teleporter or be an addon (as an hangar on your ship).
The ship is stored as its own save file. How would you account for this and adapt it for multiplayer? Removal of this mechanic is not an option. The lore says you were chased and your FTL is damaged, but the ship can still fly. Keeping it in space is much more practical and safer. Teleportation technology is a thing, so why not use it? And why can't you have both? The ship is supposed to be a safe haven. Some place that you can store things safely, not have to worry about environmental effects, monsters, etc.
"make it optional" TM If I had $1 for every time someone suggested that, I would be rich. Everything can't be optional, and this idea has little gain vs the complexity of the work involved. The current method works and makes sense.
